I suppose it depends on what kind of school you go to. I take as many classics based classes as sci-fi based classes. Even took a fantasy lit class, but I think most, if not all, fantasy is shitty, so.

Anyways. I think the point that classics are held to higher regard is that if you look at most modern sci-fi and fantasy, there's so much garbage. Wading through to find anything decent is a pain.

Also, like the person above said, there's something to be said for knowing where allusions originated. Honestly, if you don't the basic plot of Beowulf, or have no idea about Wuthering Heights, I'm going to think you're a moron. You being everyone, not you in particular. *shrug*

A charming point, here. Literature we experience is like a barometer, so to speak, with which we can gauge others. We do not have the right to make another person feel inferior, but we also have the right to maintain our own self-concept.
