What I ended up doing was altering the focus on the paper - I kept all the stuff I'd written about Lutes, but added in stuff about Ware, and used them and Brunetti to sort of... tear Scott McCloud apart. Well. To supplement his work and deal with all those places where Understanding Comics just isn't complete or specific enough. There are a lot of them, irritatingly enough. The paper was huge. Anyone who knows me will know automatically know who this is, BUT HEY.

I agree in some cases - I think that Lutes' work is much more compassionately rendered than Jimmy Corrigan, but I gotta say that reading Rusty Brown makes me see Ware in a completely different way. A lot of the themes are the same, but Chalky White kind of is my dad, which is a little werid, but I adore the book because of it. I just wish I didn't have to buy a zillion Acme Novelty Libraries to get it all.

The only reason I can think of as to why Lutes isn't as well known as he deserves to be is because he's so exhaustive with his work - because it's slow, I think a lot of people forget about him during the year-or-so in between volumes of Berlin. Also, though a lot of great comics are in black and white, I think Ware's use of color - not only that he uses it but how he uses it - makes him memorable. That, plus the fact that his toy and book-designs are kind of everywhere in comics publishing makes him more memorable to the masses because his name just keeps popping up places. Again, though, it's just a matter of how much time Lutes puts into his work. I mean, Ware puts a lot into his work, too, but it seems that he just doesn't labor away at it the same way Lutes does.
