AFIK, you're allowed to copy poses in art so long as you have permission from the original artist.

For instance... in my high school art classes, we'd often use National Geographic photos for reference (particularly of animals), but our teacher would warn us that any artwork we produced that way could not be used in our portfolios as that'd be copyright infringement. However, if you can get written permission (written is important, so you can prove it later if the person you got it from backs down!) then it's ok.

So it's far more a legal issue than it is an artistic integrity issue. The best artists I know ALL use photographs or live models for references - after they get permission from the photographer AND the model (if it's a human model. Animals, well, whatevs)

I think the reason I'm angriest is that people are upset over the fact that the artist used references -at all- rather than the real problem - that he was infringing on the rights of the Sports Illustrated photographers. References from photographs is fine in the art world, so long as you have permission from the model.

... srry, art minor nitpick >.

Actually, the problem with Greg Land (The artist in question) is not that he references stuff, but that he actually traces stuff. The trace is so obvious, that it's very easy to match line by line the photographs (And he has 'moved up' from Sports Illustrated to actual porn movies acording to some) and also that by doing that, the characters don't look the same from panel to panel. Also, he repeats his traces so often, that you get the exact same face, same shadows, same hair in at least four different female characters.

Ok, that's fair enough. It's still as though that one artist being a dick and tracing is discouraging other budding artists from the quite legitimate practice of using photos/models for reference :\
