11. Right. Because all of fandom, for every thing it is possible to fan about, started only 10 years ago. *eyeroll* Yes, the modern internet makes this all very easy and simple, but people were far from "stuck" without it.

I think I am going to finally feel old when the Beloit College Mindset List includes the line "The internet as we know it has always existed."

(That's going to be, um. Real Soon Now. 2013 maybe. ^_o)

35. Woot woot for Dead Poets Society!

51. Hey, you forgot Sam (Benny & Joon)!

66. Relax. It's possible to be functional with a fictional character companion. And it seems that the cosmic dispatch office has seen fit to distribute Snapes to a lot of us. ;)

70. Awesome Reno!

11. I don't know. Ten years ago was a long, long time ago for some of us. I know ten years ago I would've been too young to know the first thing about getting zines or going to conventions. I remember being a fan without fandom, and while on one hand, it was kind of great, I'm kind of spoiled by the availability of fanart/fic/cons/zines, etc. Not so easy for a ten-year-old in a non-geek home to get their hands on.

I remember being a fan without fandom

I'd hazard a guess that your problem 10 years ago was not so much difficulty of communication, but that you were 10 (if I've understood your numbers) and thus not very able to direct your own life.

Besides that, 10 years is not a good number for this argument because the internet as we know it today was already teeming by that time, and for years before that there were proprietary services (CompuServe, GEnie, AOL...), BBSes, Usenet, email... So really the number we're looking for is more like 25 years ago, not 10.

Don't get me wrong. We are spoiled by the internet and how easy it makes it for members of obscure social groups (not just fandoms) to find one another. It vastly lowers the critical mass of fans there needs to be for any one thing for a "fandom" to spring up around it. (For big ones, they would probably exist just as well; there was tons of Star Trek and Star Wars fandom, for example, before the internet. Harry Potter would probably be similar.)

Well, what I was saying is that ten years ago, I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority (or at least a good chunk) of the F!S folk were ten (actually, I was twelve, but my situation was pretty much the same as when I was ten).

My fandoms were Star Wars and Star Trek (as well as Pern), but I had almost no access with any other fans, aside from my little cousin. As you said, at ten, it's not so easy to direct your own life.

I didn't think the secret was referring to the internet so much as to fandom in general. After being involved in fandom for so long, it's easy to take it for granted and forget the days when, whether because of lack of age or internet, you couldn't find the rest of the fandom and just felt alone.
