21. No offense taken - actually this is a very good question to ask. I think it really depends on the fandoms you run in, honestly. I am primarily a fan of anime/manga, in particular the action/adventure 'shounen' comics targeted at young guys. While there are obviously a great many exceptions, the trend I've seen in many series is for there to be a primary male protagonist who gains great power and/or goes off on great adventures. He will often have a female counterpart as his Intended, and the author will throw that idea out there...and then have the woman stay at home to care for the children/heal the wounded/Support Her Man Silently while the man goes off to have grand adventures with his male best friends. This is where a lot of slash fans, I think, start to diverge from the canon. If you have for example, a soldier off to war, living, breathing, and dying for his best friend -- that is a clear, up front example of some kind of devotion (sexual or not). To then say the main character will reunite and marry Childhood Female Friend A (seen for a few panels every couple hundred chapters), it rings false. Now, obviously this is true for pairings that aren't male/male too (I ship many noncanon het pairings for similar reasons) -- it's just that slash/yaoi fangirls are likely to have run into those who argue that m/m pairings appeal only on a visual level ('hawt buttsecks'), and be furious about that :)

Again - obviously there are many exceptions to this rule. In particular, I will just say that this secret was created in response to an "I HATE YAOI" secret in which the author claimed yaoi fangirls only shipped their pairings because they wanted pretty boy sex, and that if the female characters were only MEN we would like them more. I'd argue if certain authors just developed their canon pairings (m/f, m/m, or f/f) better, more people would like them in general :)

That does make sense, thank you for answering. I guess I've just seen that so many times I was beginning to wonder if it was a knee-jerk reaction to all canon pairings and I have no idea why but that grated on me (again, prolly because I'm generally a canon whore).

Yeah, that's the unfortunate problem -- any time you get too many people parroting the same statement, it starts to become a gross over-generalization :)

For the record, I am a 'canon whore' for certain series too...amusingly, those are the ones I tend to not want to read any fic for at all. (Final Fantasy X comes to mind...people who tried to change the ending made me so very very sad XD)
