Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm missing the juicy deets but apparently a Tumblr user by the name of 'Zubat' scammed a bunch of people out of money in the name of Leelah Alcorn/Transgenders.

And now everyone's all up in arms saying 'DON'T MAKE FUN OF THE PEOPLE GETTING SCAMMED!' as if it's not the biggest irony to see Tumblr falling for this kind of stuff. For a website that collectively shouts and stamps their feet to claim they are SO much more self educated and better than commonfolk, they sure as shit don't know how to do any research for themselves.

Serves them right.

This is why I generally don't donate to peoples' pleas for money, no matter how good the cause sounds on the surface.

It's why I only donate to people I know.

What about people you know signalboosting for friends you don't know?

Re: Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I'd ask myself if my friends have a history of being credulous before I took their signal boosting as a sign that all was on the up and up.

I still remember the woman who claimed that her cat had got out on 4th of July and when she found it, it was covered with burns because someone had set it on fire. Lots of people chipped in toward the poor burned kitty's hefty vet bills, and nearly always it was because someone they knew had signal boosted the story, and they were totally sure their friend wouldn't do that for anything that was not legit. A couple of days later the whole story fell apart, and the owner of the supposedly burned cat (who had not been burned at all) admitted it was all a Soshul Experiment.

So, no...no donations to FOAFs.

er

your last line doesn't actually jibe with the rest of your post.

I mean say you have a friend, who has another friend that you don't really know who needs money for something important like paying rent or medical bills, and you know your friend isn't a moron. The example you gave isn't really like that.

Re: Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I would still have my doubts, unless my friend had observed FOAF's need firsthand, since some people call everyone they know even slightly a friend, and some people believe everything they hear. My own friend's intelligence has nothing to do with it: intelligent people get taken in by moochers and scammers all the time. In fact, I suspect that people who think they're too smart to be taken in by scammers are in extra danger.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm using an actual friend of mine I've known >10 years as an example. I've passed around her gofundme page 'cuz she needed some money to make ends meet while she worked on a book.

Re: Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's a fair point, and tbh, I would be more open to chipping in a few bucks to help out an ongoing creative endeavor for a FOAF with a crowdfunding page, than to ponying up because someone I knew online had relayed a sob story from someone they knew online.

Re: Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Tumblr's entirely too trusting on a sob story, especially when it has the right labels in just the right places.

Re: Something about Zubats

Like that story recently where a person said they had a neighbor who sent them a letter saying their yard was "too gay". And Tumblr donated thousands of dollars for them to "gay up their yard."

Because someone said it. That's literally the only proof.

And that was confirmed as another hoax, isn't it?

I just looked this up. Details include an alleged borderline personality disorder, fourteen grand, claiming to be POC, an alleged sock puppet with 'terf' in their username, a claim to be a paleontologist who works for NASA, and allegedly speaking eight or ten languages.

God damn, the crazy is strong in this one.

Crazy like a fox.

I envy the people who know how to seize moments like this. Bet I could do the same, just Google a picture to use as 'me' and claim I'm four Tumblr BINGO labels, ask for money and see if it works.

Edit

[personal profile] iceyred 2015-07-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Edit: some sources are saying sixteen thousand was embezzled. There's also alleged emotional abuse, and stolen photos. I'm getting popcorn.

Thread OP- What's the eta on all this? I only just heard about this whole explosion today via a scolding post, how did Zubat manage to rake in that much?!

I'm scrolling through tumblr now. She apparently used GoFundMe to rake in money that was supposed to be used to send care packages to transgendered girls (make-up, clothes, that sort of thing). Then she told people donations leveled off and she didn't have enough manpower to do the work. Another few thousand came in, and she shut down the charity. I'm reading mentions of a multi-week trip to NYC, and some suggestion that she funded a few of her tattoos with the money.

This chick is like the lovechild of Rachel Dolezal and Riley.

I mean, Tumblr is hardly the first place on the internet to be scammed out of a bunch of money for "charity". Its why I don't trust internet charity in general. Though scamming people while using the name of a real kid who committed suicide seems particularly evil to me though.

Never forget the ballpit.

No one claims that though. If you're going to rag on tumblr and pretend it's some hivemind, at least get your stereotype correct.

Re: Something about Zubats

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck off, I saw two posts scolding people for mocking those who got scammed, and if you haven't, you have your head in the sand. Tumblr's all about protecting their own when it comes to fucking up responsibility online, and if you don't know that, you've got your head in the sand right along with them.

This is why I don't donate to anything at all.

Let them eat cake.
