According to this http://failfandomanonwiki.pbworks.com/w/page/95246807/Sherlock%20221b%20Con%20Wank the faunlock trope is babyfur, so he's a baby deer.

And there are a million better, less traumatizing information out there that I could've put in my head instead of this.

Huh. I enjoy fawnlock as one of the many weird, fun tropes of the Sherlock fandom, and I've personally never heard it being referred to as "babyfur" until just now. I also don't agree that it is babyfur. There are some instances of babyfur fawnlock out there, for sure, but the majority of fawnlock is about Sherlock as an adult fawn. His level of fawn-ness also changes from case to case, so some fics/artworks have more of a whiff of bestiality to them than others. In addition, I have yet to read a fawnlock fic in which Sherlock's intelligence is implied or stated as being below a human average. He is often (though not always) depicted as being ill-acquainted with the ways of humans. But an initial inability to speak human language and an ignorance of human etiquette does not equal a lack of intelligence; it just means he has a lot to learn if he wants to get by in civilization.

Just my two cents.

Also, for the record, fawnlock existed for ages before all of this "babyfur" controversy came up. In the beginning, IIRC, fawnlock was only controversial to the extent that some people found it annoying, or, like, appropriative of certain people's nature-based spiritualism or something??? IDEK.

Just in case it isn't obvious, where fawnlock truly does cross into babyfur territory, I find it squicky and don't partake. Not my kink; not defending it. Ditto bestiality. I prefer my fawnlock to have feet not hooves. Ideally he wears clothes, and either has or is in the process of quickly developing strong language skills. :)

Except that "adult fawn" is an oxymoron, fawns are literally not adult by definition. I think the trope would be a LOT better served if people didn't get fawn and faun confused, or if they called it "deerlock" or something, because fawn means "baby deer," so it's hard for me at least to not see it as having at least overtones of babyfur. Mind you, I'm not into shaming anyone for it either, it's all fictional so go for it, but "adult fawn" is a really odd term.

My understanding of it is that it was called fawnlock not to imply youth but because it just sounds catchier than "deerlock." There may have also been some initial confusion over whether he was supposed to be a faun or not, so fawnlock seemed to imply that both faunlock and deerlock could be included in the trope.

For my part, it never even occurred to me that fawn implied young. I just haven't seen that as even slightly inherent to the trope.
