Should have waited anon. News has come out that he bought it legally and someone dropped the ball on reporting it to others.

Not OP

Legal or not, it is still a disgusting waste of water in a drought.

Re: Not OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? It is for a farm.

I suspect most people would rather have more water than avocados. I would, and I friggin' love avocados.

Re: Not OP

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the OP suggesting he should have thrown away this year's crop, and every year there's a drought from now on?

Does the OP want all fruit farms to be banned? I'm not from California, so I'm genuinely asking if this has been proposed.

Growing food is not a waste of water. Lawns are a waste of water. Priorities, fellow human. Criticizing people for making food, especially raw ingredients, is NOT progressive.

I don't want to get into too much depth here because this is an incredibly complex issue

but this is an incredibly fucking complex issue, and given that fact, blanket statements like this are dumb as hell

more specifically, the idea that the water shortage could be wholly ameliorated by stopping watering lawns and golf courses is almost certainly just wrong; there's strong evidence to suggest that the California agricultural sector's water practices are deeply wasteful; and if ensuring high food production is a progressive end goal, so is ensuring that people in cities have enough water to drink and wash themselves, and ensuring that we don't totally destroy the entire ecosystem of California - there are basically no endpoints in this equation that *aren't* progressive values on some level

Ehhhh, it was still kind of dodgy, tbh. Construction companies have special permits to draw water for building projects and some of them turn around to sell it to a third party. It's legal, but given California's drought conditions and the fact that Selleck, a very wealthy man, is using a limited resource for his avocado farm, it's still on shaky ethical ground.

I didn't realize you were clued into the financial status of Tom Selleck.

Ah, the best and most noble of mustaches.

But I guess not the most noble of men. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
So now you're mustache appreciation club, too?

I guess I'm kind of a facial-hair-in-general appreciation club.

A mustache is a little beard for your nose.

Nah, this is actually a real thing. California is in the grips of a very serious drought and has been for some time.

Check it out:

El Nino is coming. This isn't going to mean a damn thing this time next year.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's going to be drought here in Australia instead. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand... avocados, man. -avocados-

Can't judge the guy for wanting a little guac on the side.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
The funny thing is, he doesn't even like avocados. They make him gag! Shame, because I love 'em and I'd love having avocado trees right outside my house. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Maybe he's got friends who like 'em?
