I'm honestly not sure whether or not you're defending Wesley here, or calling out some other person you know.

That said, I would also say that I think that whatever qualities you think Wesley has, he also has the quality of being extremely annoying. So it makes sense that someone would not like him even if they could sympathize with him.

I didn't even feel like much of an outcase (at least, not for being young and supersmart) but I still identified with Wesley. Wesley Crusher 4-ever, man!

Wesley-hate is way down these days. Most people have accepted that Wesley was a bad character, and have moved on. Everyone who watched TNG as it aired now has it colored by nostalgia, too.

I like Wesley Crusher.

I think a lot of fans who hate Wesley (and Jar Jar Binks) have some sort of weird self-loathing and fear of their own "nerdy kid" moments.

Or they lack empathy.

I never had a problem with Wesley, either. I mean, c'mon, the whole Starfleet cadets thing with him and Ashley Judd was a pretty good story, considering the fact that we had to deal with Pepto-Bismol-coloured trilobite-cockroach hybrid mind-parasites that invaded the top echelons of Starfleet from a galaxy far, far away...AKA the infamous "exploding head" episode...

TL;DR: If you think Wesley Crusher was the worst of the bad writing, I think you've never watched TNG.

Yeah, I think I was more annoyed by Picard and Riker in the first season than by Wesley.

... for me it was Yar. By the time they killed her off I'd given up on the show.

(Crazy thought: to me the show would have been far more interesting had the casting of Yar and Troihad been flipped.)

I didn't have a problem with Wesley either. And Wil Wheaton is a pretty cool guy, though I think he looks better clean-shaven.

That's because there's nothing to identify with in most episodes. He's either a maguffin or a deus ex asshole.

I loved this kid. I had a serious crush on him. In fact, I would wake up early to watch reruns just to see his handsome face.
