Re: Hurt/comfort: Can one exist without the other?

It's funny, I would normally frame it the other way - do you have to have some hurt to justify the comfort, or can you just have nothing but fluffy comfort?

I think my tastes are somewhat different from most of the rest of fandom.

But in any case, I think it's fine to just have whatever you think is interesting. If you want to just do hurt, that's your prerogative. That's kind of the whole point of fandom.

What do you consider "comfort" then? Because in my mind, the word comfort implies that someone needs to be comforted about something. That could be something really mild, but it seems there does have to be some sort of hurt in order to have comfort.

I replied to you below! But basically, I guess my position is that I can come up with reasons for someone needing comfort without having to go into detail about the hurt.

I think that a few paragraphs about a character having a headache or a bad mood is enough to launch a comforting fluffy mcfluffin, fire all canons, etc. I miss all the fic about a character having a sudden bout of cold and an ensuing comfort. Ten years ago it was more popular.

Yep! I'm certainly 100% okay with that and will read it all day for any pairing I even halfway ship.
