Re: Hurt/comfort: Can one exist without the other?

I generally prefer to have some comfort with my hurt (although I would still rather have more focus on the hurting aspect), but every once in a while I just get in the mood to read about a certain character get absolutely wrecked without any comfort happening in the story...even if I love that character. A lack of comfort doesn't necessarily make some stories seem incomplete; it just depends on the fic. Sometimes an abundance of comfort would just seem unrealistic or tacked on while there are other times when a story just doesn't seem right without some comfort going on.
