I've never dealt with bronies so idk about that, but sometimes I feel it might be a generational shift? It feels like a couple years ago we were all knee-deep in our filhty NC-17 HP (or whatever) fic and whatnot, and now I see a lot of those "But think of the children!"-postings going around, for various fandoms. You know, all that "Shipping [X] is problematic"-stuff.

I'm not really deeply immersed in this fandom though (although I like SU), so the people above me might know better.

I've noticed the same thing myself. It's fascinating how fandom changed so much in such a short period of time. I'm trying to pinpoint when this shift started to happen. I think the fall of livejournal and rise of tumblr had to do with it, but idk.

I can pinpoint it to no more than 5 years ago. It started when fandom started migrating to tumblr. Before that you never heard the word problematic used so much. Everyone just stayed in their own lanes and there was no, "BUT WHAT IF KIDS SEE!"

I can understand how some ships are seen as problematic, but now I'm starting to see pretty vanilla ships involving two characters of the same age get called problematic because they disagree sometimes. Seems the area for what is considered problematic is getting bigger and bigger every day.

I hope it's just a passing trend because they are just pissing people off by making fandom a chore instead of a thing people do for fun.

I feel like what people are doing to the world problematic is what people did to the word trigger.

It's funny to think that 'trigger' originally had a real psychiatric meaning. It was for people with PTSD or similar disorders, where something could cause flashbacks or an overwhelming panic attack or other genuinely incapacitating trauma. Then people with no outstanding psychological disorders started horning in on the idea, and now it gets used to mean 'I don't like this thing and will get grumpy if I see it.'

I think there's still genuine need for the original concept, but it's been so watered down there's no way to tell one from the other.

That says nothing good about these people's prospects for actual IRL relationships if they have such a low threshold for what they consider unhealthy. (They'll probably grow out of it.)

I would venture to say one of the things that started the shift was the Warriors of Innocence and Strikethrough mess on LJ, back in 2007? I feel like SJW culture only started to become really noticeable after that (that may be just my POV though).

I think it definitely has to do with the fandom shift and not just the general fear of bronies. Fandom has changed a lot within the past few years in both good and bad ways.

I think the porn ban is coming out of people wanting to make fandom a safe space but the problem is fandom has never been a safe space (and realistically will never be especially since it's much larger then it ever has been.)

The only way to make the internet a safe place for kids is to stay off the internet. Simple as that. People think they should child-proof it for everyone, when it is only the individual kids parents responsibility to monitor what their kid is doing.
