This place isn't as progressive as some users claim either.
I remember a few months ago, someone made a secret about being upset when the only gay character in a tv show is killed off, and almost half of the comments were really irrationally angry stright people telling lgbt people to get over it and to shut the fuck up and to stop crying.

Like damn.

Link?

I don't feel like going though the archive for literally hours trying to find it.
If you're honestly that interested, then go ahead, be my guest.

Yeah, I don't think this is the worst place ever or anything, not by a long shot.
It's not bad, but it's far from being "safe"
In the past three or so years I've been here, I've seen:
-Various child-abuse supporters
-Multiple people being accused of lying about being abused or raped
-The dissmisal and mocking of lgbt people and issues
-A crapload of sexism and racism
-A dash of victim blaming
-And people just generally overeacting to the dumbest things.
-Oh, and I almost forgot the "Go back to tumblr you damn SJW tumblerina!!" mindset a few users here seem to have.

DA

There has always been a fairly vocal conservative religious minority on here, so that can't have been a total shock, really? I mean, yes, the fact that we're here indicates we're not, IDK, Westboro Baptist-tier religious, or anything, but there are still at least four or five named users that I can think of, right now, and at least two other anons (besides me LOL). I don't remember the secret you're talking about, FWIW, and I wouldn't have commented at all on it, let alone say the things that were said. I also don't recall anyone ever labelling FS "progressive" though? We're fairly evenly spread out along the political-religious spectrum, from what I can tell.

I don't know if I agree with that at all, though it may be all about perspective. I know a lot of people IRL who are considerably more conservative than me, and I'm probably not the most liberal person on F!S though I do lean pretty liberal. Compared to my overall RL experiences F!S is extremely progressive.

ETA: and while I spend a lot of time online, I'm not part of very many communities like this one. There are only two I can think of offhand, one is definitely more conservative than here and the other is mostly sporadic (it's a chat room on a gaming site, not a forum).

No, no there hasn't. When has there ever been a vocal religious minority here? Like, ever? In the years that I've come here daily, I remember just a handful of users who were ostensibly religious and had conservative views, though at least half of them were more likely to be trolls or people "presenting the opposite belief" in order to "start discussion".

We are in NO way spread "evenly across the political-religious spectrum". I guarantee we extremely skewed liberal, like any fandom space. Especially in regards to social and religious issues. I'm not discounting the possibility that there is a conservative user or two, but it is definitely not even.

AYRT

I didn't mean vocal, as in, we're all thumping holy books and calling people to repent or anything, anon. I meant, there are always posts about the various (okay, yeah, this skews Abrahamic) holidays/holy days that get significant responses, and any thread about Catholicism or Judaism usually sees at least ten - twenty replies; there are at least three Muslims and two Evangelical Christian named users that I can think of off-hand, one Quaker, and two Judeo-Christians, and we're all pretty open about what we believe/what we are/what we grew up with, and don't really get a lot of blowback or hate/mockery for that.

I admit, some of the Christian vs. atheist discussions here have gone sideways at times, but IME that's only been in the last year or so. (I've been on FS since mumbletytwo Clan of the Cave Bear give or take.) Usually there are good discussions (outside of the debates) about what people do/believe/think/etc., including discussions about different holy books, etc. My point, there is no way any of these discussions could have taken place on a forum that is "extremely skewed liberal."

Additionally, if you think fandom itself as a whole is "extremely skewed liberal" I have several morose juvenile canines I'd like to introduce you to, OP. LOL. SFF fandom has always had right-wingers and left-wingers and centrists, and anarchists, too. Much like society as a whole.

TL;DR: "extremely skewed liberal"?? Really?!

I think there's just SJW backlash. A trend where everyone's been so jaded by SJWs, they tend to lash out in the opposite direction.

I have no idea what thread you are referring to though? Link? I feel like this is hyperbole. Though there's plenty of bickering when it comes to sort of what things do/do not "socially represent".

nayrt, I lurk more than I post and I read here almost every day, but I don't remember that secret either. would appreciate a link.
