Argh. I SO have to catch up on Crystal. I have no problem with it. I just think the character development is awful. I mean, Mamoru and Usagi barely know each other and suddenly THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO FREAKIN' MUCH OMG. Like, what?

It's weird because like...I like Crystal because it doesn't waste time with all the filler the 90's series had but yeah...

...it also cuts out a lot of stuff that would actually be interesting on the character development end. Like I wonder if you have someone who actually has no exposure to Sailor Moon watch Crystal, would they come back and be like, "wtf why do they even do [whatever]" whereas people who've already read the manga or watched the earlier show just get what's expected.

There's only so much that can be explained by reincarnation and soulmates, after all. :)

This is true. Regardless of ones feelings towards the original series (and I gotta be honest, a good chunk of it has aged like milk IMHO), one of the upsides is that a fair chunk of the "filler" episodes had, was that it could devote a lot more time to the side characters, and not just the Sailor Senshi, but also the likes of Naru (what with the whole Nephrite mini-arc). And even still, the episodes that did focus on Usagi, it made her character a little more nuanced/fleshed out.

Granted, it's still filler, but most of the people I know only remember the episodes that developed characters, rather than advanced the plot at full speed.

Crystal is pretty much a literal adaptation of the original manga, right down to emulating certain panels or scenes. Its focus is strictly on moving the plot forward in comparison to the original series. Whether this is a good or bad thing is entirely up to personal taste -I have no preference, personally-, but it's kind of obvious that if you're (generally speaking) going to watch SMC in the hopes that it has that similar world-building/character developing spirit like the original anime, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're a fan of the DBZ Kai school of condensation and focus on story, you'll probably be satisfied I think.

This is definitely true for the people who only watched the first anime. The rest though? They were either confused or critical about the story, the characters and the plot holes. Some of the things they criticized could also be said about the manga, but plenty were caused by Crystal cutting out/changing/adding things without thinking about how they affect other scenes.

Like, not a single one of my friends could buy the Senshi's friendship after episode six. You can't cut out friendship moments, have the main heroine stomp out on her friends for a guy she barely knows, add a fight she's not in because of said stomping out, have her only be there long enough to defeat the enemy before leaving for said guy for no good reason, and then expect people to believe the characters when they talk about how good friends they are. Especially when a later episode contradicts said talk because Crystal decided to remove a rather important line.

Which gets a bit problematic when a big part of the finale is about the Senshi being willing to die for Usagi not because it's their duty, but because Usagi the person means so much for them.

Not that I was able to convince them to watch so long. Ep 10 made them drop it completely.

And even then reading the manga won't help because Crystal really fumbled up the Dark Kingdom arc. People keep mentioning the failed Sen/Shi subplot but the problems started as early as episode six - Usagi comes off as a rather different person from her mangaself thanks to her reaction to Tux being a possible enemy.
