I think AOOO's "kudos" system killed the commenting culture.

NAYRT - Pretty much.

I think people have said this about pretty much everything since the dawn of fandom.

Fair point - after all, I remember people saying LJ had killed forums.

Meh. I'm as happy about kudos as I am reviews. Either way it lets me know people like what I wrote.

some people just won't comment. giving them a ticky box can't hurt.

That's how I feel, yea. If people want to comment they'll comment, kudos or no kudos.

If they aren't going to comment, then giving an alternative (that is quicker and 'less pressure') doesn't hurt anything.

I disagree; it's a culture thing. I have fics that I've posted on both ffn and ao3, and though my hit number on ao3 is about 10 times what I have on ffn, and I have lots of kudos, the number of comments is almost the same. Meaning, there's a MUCH higher ratio of commenters on ffn.

I don't doubt that happens in some fandoms, but I'm not entirely convinced it's the case for all of them. In the fandom I'm currently in there's quite a few comments left on AO3.

Though frankly I rarely visit FFN these days because in the last few fandoms I've been in there's been a slew of canon character/OC stuff, and while I don't begrudge anyone the ability to write it, I have no interest in it. I prefer AO3's search system, too.

Facebook's "Like" was the feature that killed commenting; the Kudos is just an echo of that imo.

nah, i see it as a way for people who normally wouldn't comment at all to show appreciation.

sites like tumblr and facebook are much more to blame.

I love the kudos feature, because it creates something for that mental space of "I liked this fic, but I don't really have anything specific to say about it!" That's a space I'm in a lot, and I'm pleased when one of my stories puts someone in it.

When a fic puts me in that mental space, I comment saying that I liked the fic. It's generic but shows more effort to respond on my part.

I like the idea of kudos as an alternative for people who wouldn't comment anyway.
