Random question: for those that eat frozen food meals, the most common way to heat them is in the microwave. But they offer instructions for the oven too. Not a toaster oven, an actual oven. Does anyone actually heat their frozen food meal in the oven instead of the microwave?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If I have time I do. Oven makes things a little crispier, whereas microwave will make them hot but soggy. I guess it depends exactly what we're talking about but yeah.

I recently heard that some people put frozen pizzas in the microwave... I did not even know that was possible. lol

I do for pizza or pot pies or anything with a crust because I like a crispy crust. otherwise no.

Yep, definitely for pot pies. Only heathens cook pot pies in the microwave.

Thirding this. Also anything breaded, any kind of fillet or cutlet or whatever that goes in the oven. If there are fries with it, definitely in the oven.

Yes. I hate microwaves, they screw up the texture of food. Although instead of the oven, I prefer to just pop the food out of its box and heat it in a skillet on the stovetop.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Never, unless I'm baking something else at the same time. It just wastes electricity and takes too long to heat up.

Depending on what kind of food we're talking about, occasionally, yes. Not a meal like a TV dinner, but some frozen convenience foods. Some things turn out better in the oven, like anything that needs to be crispy. I only do this in the winter, though.

It is kind of odd, since people are more likely to have access to microwaves now that regular ovens. You can have a microwave in a motel room, but you probably won't have an oven there.

That's how TV dinners were heated up back in the 1950s. By oven.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in the days when TV dinners/frozen foods came in metal trays rather than plastic ones (up through the early to mid 1980s; I am Olde) there wasn't much of an option, but now the only frozen things I heat in the oven are pizzas and anything the directions recommend ovens for (like if it says "for best results do not heat in microwave").

As my microwave is nearly as old as I am, nearly all my frozen food goes in the oven downstairs or my toaster oven. I don't even use my microwave anymore, it's such a pain.

I never use the microwave, and only use the toaster oven if I'm doing something that might distract me when my meal is cooked, so want the automatic turnoff - and then I only use it for frozen pizza...anything in a tray goes to the actual oven.

Almost always. It tastes way better when you cook it slower.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Ever since I came to the conclusion most food tastes better oven heated I only ever use the microwave if I must or for a really quick zap.

Unless you're literally starving or low on time it's not a big deal to wait, it's just as easy as microwaving.

This. Mostly I use the microwave if I need to defrost something quickly (like a bagel before putting it in the toaster) or heat up coffee or something. Food generally tastes better if you cook it in an oven.

I love my toaster oven and use it for most things.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's a relic from the days where people were more likely to own an oven than a microwave.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I do when I am patient enough (not usually) cause I think a lot of the times they taste better out of the oven as opposed to microwave.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-07-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the item.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-07-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the operating system code for how to make the decision:

If steamed, then microwave.
If browned, then oven.
If greasy, then frying pan.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I always use an oven.

Yes

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly use the oven, but I sometimes use the microwave. It depend on the water content (because of how microwaves work) and the texture I'm looking for.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't eat frozen meals anymore (unless I cooked it myself and froze it), but when I did, I would do microwave only. Only I would pop the entree and sides out of their container and transfer to corningware or some other microwave-safe dish. And then I'd cover with a plate. Does that make me weird?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. I usually transfer the food to my own dishes. I don't likje microwaving in plastic or coated paper.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
i sometimes do this if my roommate is using the microwave.
