Re: Things you wish fanfic authors would/wouldn't do

Don't be coy in the summary either. "X discovers a little magic in his life" and similar is not a summary! It is cod-poetic nonsense that tells me nothing about the fic.

Please tag responsibly too. I don't even know how many tags you have but I guarantee it is too many, take some of those off!

Don't feel you always have to put every idea in one fic. Really, less is more. One big idea per fic, and that includes non-canon shipping. Mulder and Scully have a threesome with Skinner is one fic, or Mulder and Scully go to space, but not Mulder and Scully have a threesome with Skinner in Space plus a dozen more grab-bag ideas and a crossover with NCIS. Mulder and Scully crossover with NCIS is also fine, but not Mulder and Scully crossover with NCIS and Tony and Gibbs are shagging too.

I agree with you, mainly - though I do think that a good author can write a "coy" summary that, in combination with judicious tags, gives the reader exactly enough information without telling the whole story up front. It's a delicate thing, and most writers don't hit that sweet spot, but personally I love it when it works out.

I think the most basic piece of advice that can be given to any aspiring writer is "you are not as good as you think you are!". With the collorary that you are probably not as bad as you fear.

AYRT

With this I agree wholeheartedly.
