I agree with you, mainly - though I do think that a good author can write a "coy" summary that, in combination with judicious tags, gives the reader exactly enough information without telling the whole story up front. It's a delicate thing, and most writers don't hit that sweet spot, but personally I love it when it works out.

I think the most basic piece of advice that can be given to any aspiring writer is "you are not as good as you think you are!". With the collorary that you are probably not as bad as you fear.
