You have clearly never met my cat. I am dad and whenever anything is scary he needs dad to rescue him.

Ah. I can only speak from personal experience. Our cat was in charge. She paid attention to you when she wanted something, and would get annoyed if she didn't get it. Otherwise she just ignored us. The cat we had when I was a kid was the same way.

I think it really depends on the individual animal, since a lot of cats are very codependent/submissive. I've never owned a cat that didn't submit to me, but I've met plenty who hadn't been trained properly (or at all) that wouldn't submit to anyone.
