You can phrase it any way you like. It always sounds like rationalizing not wanting to hear of someone's suffering. Period.

Just because you know one person with a broken hand and someone else with a broken hand *and* a broken leg doesn't mean the former's hand is any less broken or in need of repair. Maybe he doesn't need help as urgently--but he still needs help.

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen Asians complain about Blacks not paying attention to other minorities' suffering (and taking attention away from other minorities' suffering.)

I'm not saying I agree with it, just that I've seen it happen-- and the person complaining may not actually be white.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Away? What are we? Things that compete for 'white' attention?

It doesn't even matter if they say they suffer more or whatever. That isn't even the problem.

Now, white people who focus on POC "whining"...

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like I think it's a zero-sum game.

All I was trying to say is that White people aren't the only ones who talk like that.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They aren't the only ones, but they are the most powerful/privileged. It's too easy for them to say 'POC ARE RACIST TOO' because that way they can turn the tables towards a racism that has zero influence in POC's lives. It's not like other minorities control society.

[identity profile] valsadie.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
So what if Blacks pay attention to the suffering of other groups or not. It's not the Blacks who are in a position to do anything about it. Black people are completely aware of the suffering of other groups, but in their case it's strictly academic; a personal choice. At the end of the day, each group can only tell their own story, and wouldn't presume--and shouldn't presume--to tell the story of another group. Other groups can certainly speak for themselves.

And if it appears to you that Blacks have "too" much to say, blame the history, not its people. Blacks have been here *centuries* longer and spent most of that time persecuted most especially and publicly and let's not forget legally, as if it was the only way the country could function.

In other words, don't take it personal if hearing about the suffering of other groups is a luxury some Blacks cannot afford. That's just reality.

And more Blacks would sympathize with the other nationalities suffering American racism if some of these groups weren't used as further tools of racist persecution against them (aka who owns *your* neighborhood stores).

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Erh. I wasn't complaining? Just making a note that someone doesn't have to be white in order to say something like what people were saying.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
... Uh. God no. Now, tell me you aren't white too.

When you have to live with it, honey? Perspective changes.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it how anyone who says things like this is assumed to be white. I also like it how "white" becomes just as racist a term as anything that is said about minority groups- "white" has become "entitled racist", and that's bullshit.

There are also other things that mean one has to live with being oppressed. Sure, homosexuality isn't visible by sight, but it sure is visible when you can't marry someone you've been with for 30 years. Last I checked, skin color had nothing to do with who you could marry.

So please get off of your high horse and stop pretending that you aren't expressing racist opinions here. Stop assuming things about the people who are posting- it only makes you look like an idiot in the end.

[identity profile] karnythia.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Last I checked, skin color had nothing to do with who you could marry. I suggest you pick up a history book. Start with the term miscenegation.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I said "last I checked". As in "at the moment, race does not prevent marriage between two people of different races in the United States". Please don't assume that I'm so ignorant as to not know that at one point it was illegal to marry outside of your own race.

[identity profile] karnythia.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to be ignorant of the concept of institutionalized racism, and very interested in sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to grasp that white privilege exists. After all racial profiling still doesn't seem to include white people.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not ignorant of the concept. I'm also not denying white privilege. I'm just saying that fighting fire with fire isn't the way to do it.

And who are you to assume that I'm white because of the things that I'm saying and the views I hold?

[identity profile] karnythia.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did I say you were white? And I don't think anyone gets to tell black people how to respond to racism. I hear a lot of other POC that are drinking the racism koolaid spouting this shit the same as white people that insist they're not racist but those black people don't act the way they need to in order to end racism. Newsflash the onus isn't on black people to end racism. It's not on us to fight anyone else's battles either.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt it implied by the last line, sorry. I'm not even talking about responding to racism at this point, I'm just talking about how people treat people who are from a different racial background than they themselves are. I'm talking about people shutting other people out just because they're not from the same race, assuming that because a white person isn't black, they're racist and/or could never understand what it feels like to be black- which where I am seems to happen a lot. I've seen black people get called racist by people of the same race because they hang out with a mixture of racial groups and not just the other black (and hispanic) students. I understand where you're coming from about not telling black people how to respond to racism, but sometimes the way that they do is very extreme and, in my opinion, pushes some people farther away from wanting to change the way that things are.

[identity profile] karnythia.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not on black people to make everyone else happy or to coddle people that want to be hand held. Personally I've got enough on my plate without being expected to play Mammy in order to get white people to stop defending a system that creates issues like colorism and internalized racism. And being white really does mean you have no idea what it is to be black in America.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sweety. Just no. Please. I won't educate you. Sorry.

If you want to pretend you are just as oppressed being white, do it.

I will tell you something, reverse-racism? Bullshit. http://www.raceandhistory.com/selfnews/viewnews.cgi?newsid1024893033,80611,.shtml
http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0920-06.htm

Ah, look at me. In the end I'm educating you.

If you aren't a white racist? This isn't about you. So shut up. But stop pretending you don't have privileges you sure have.

Of course you can be discriminated for your sexuality or gender. We just aren't talking about that, aren't we?

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me reverse racism is bullshit all you want; I'm never, ever going to listen after the things that I have experienced in my own life.

The only way that I'll accept it as bullshit is because it's not reverse racism at all- it's racism, plain and simple.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-04 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
... I'm done educating you then. Some day of your life, when you feel ready to take off those ear-plugs and blindfold; and start seeing reality, read those links. They are useful. And by white people.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you thought those links were supposed to change my life and views, you were wrong. I understand that racism against white people is much less of a problem than racism against people-who-are-not-white. I've known that for a long time. However, I'm sick to death of people acting as though it's fine for black people to be racist against whites. Yes, white people did some fucked-up shit in the past. Yes, "white privilege" exists. No, that does not mean that the right way to respond is by banding together and saying, "let's all be racist right back!" Just because "reverse" racism is less effective and less widespread doesn't mean it doesn't hurt the people who have to deal with being assumed to be powerful/racist/not good enough to be friends with because they're white.

[identity profile] thrives.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLYYYYYYYYYYYYY. Hahaha.
