Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hate them. I want the first time I watch something to be going along for the ride and seeing what happens. And then getting the emotional reaction associated with that. I can then rewatch and get a different perspective of it, and see how everything fit together knowing what I know now. However, if I am spoiled, I can never get that first instinctive, emotional reaction.

My thing is that I don't understand why it is so difficult not to spoil people. I do the best I can by tumblr blacklisting things I don't want to be spoiled for, and when LJ/DW were big, I used to be good about not clicking LJ-cuts/spoiler cuts. But a lot of people wouldn't/won't/don't use them. And then there were the people who would say "OMG, Darth Vader is Luke's father!" instead of saying "In Star Wars last night, can you believe that Darth Vader is Luke's father?!" The latter one lets me see the title of the thing being discussed and not read more, whereas the former does not.

Yes, I am aware that ultimately it is my responsibility not to be spoiled. However, if something only takes a few seconds (adding tags or a cut) or a little consideration (mentioning the fandom before the spoiler) and it helps others, why is there a big push not to do it? Why are there people that purposely spoil others just for the "fun" of it. ("Because if I can enjoy something while knowing the spoilers, it shouldn't matter if you are spoiled!" or "It's your responsibility not to be spoiled and I shouldn't have to do anything!" or whatever.)
