Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about them.

But a lot of people seem to have really intense hatred of being spoiled.

Generally I don't care because I figure if a twist is THAT important to the quality of the story and my enjoyment of it, then the work can't be that good in the first place.

I call it the M Night Shyamalan Rule

I think it's broadly a dick move. I think it does diminish my enjoyment of things, and I'd like to avoid them when possible. But I don't think it diminishes my enjoyment that much and it's best to take a laid-back attitude here.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

I hate spoilers and I hate the argument that "well the work can't be that good if a spoiler ruins it!" For some people, it's not about the quality of the work, it's about the adventure. I like to experience stories fresh, for me, it's a very different experience having no idea what's going to happen next, as opposed to anticipating an event. No spoilers for me ever, thank you.

I try to avoid them as much as possible. And I think people that intentionally spoil things for someone are assholes.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

I personally prefer not to be spoiled for recent things, but I don't think it's anyone else's responsibility to keep me unspoiled. If something is more than a few weeks old, I don't care about being spoiled at all because I clearly wasn't jumping to see it immediately.

I don't mind them, but I respect those that do and will try to avoid spoiling them. However, I think people who insist that there should be no spoilers ever just because they don't want them are just as rude as those who spoil people who don't want to be spoiled.

I hate them.

The plot is pretty much my main enjoyment of most media. I also rarely rewatch.

Pretty much.

It's not a big deal to me if Dumblydore dies, I like the experience of following something instead.

It might be that most of what I follow is very visually focused though, so knowing that Flipflop did the thing doesn't matter as much as seeing it in action and it's kinda hard to "spoil" that over text.

I don't care about spoilers at all. Basic plot is not the main thing that attracts me to a story. I don't care if I know vaguely what's going to happen because the actual experience of the visuals and the dialogue and the music and everything will still be fresh for me.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I care about them for big things, and I don't think it's fair to liken all of those to twists a la Shyamalan. Sometimes I think I have a pretty good guess about what's going to happen, but I'd rather wait for it and see it happen and have my reaction to being right in the moment. Although people who spoil intentionally because they don't care about spoilers and don't like that anyone feels differently make me more angry than the actual act of being spoiled.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

I used to binge spoilers back when I participated in more fandoms. It was so much fun. I was like I have to know everything!!! I don't care that much anymore, and none of my RL friends ever cared that much, so whatever happens on the shows we watch together happens.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about them at all. Knowing that something happens isn't the same thing as actually seeing/reading it - I got accidentally spoiled about my favorite character in a canon dying and I still ended up crying for almost half an hour when I got to that part because the knowledge did nothing to make the scene itself any less emotional.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate them because they alter my experience of the rest of the story pretty drastically. I love going into something with fresh eyes, not expecting anything at all, so that I can have truly honest reactions to it. And that includes stuff like knowing which characters are fan favourites/most hated, too.

If I know a character is going to die or betray someone, for example, it's pretty much permanently ruined my perception of that character. Which sucks, honestly.

Only once has a spoiler ruined my enjoyment of something, and even then it was more that the detail the spoiler revealed was something that ruined the show all on its own. It wouldn't have been any less ruining to come upon it unexpected, and at least knowing in advance allowed me to adjust my expectations accordingly. If folks don't want to know, then that is fair enough, but they ought not go around demanding others don't talk about it just so they don't feel left out. Gotta choose guys, either fear the spoiler and accept being left out when people enjoy talking about the hit new thing, or join in the convo and accept you'll learn deets out of sequence occasionally.

That's a simplistic way to think of it. You can't think of the twist as just the clincher that everything hangs on. The media should build towards it. There should already be this sense of anticipation, either in forefront or the back of your mind. And, when it happens, you should be shocked, exhilarated, because you felt the coming storm but you did not know the extent of devastation it wrought. If you've been spoiled for the twist, your sense anticipation is dulled because you know all of what is coming and the cathartic outpouring of emotion, the release of that anticipation, is less satisfying.

This is why people dislike spoilers. They don't get the same emotional enjoyment out of the media otherwise.

I don't like them but if I'm trying to remain unspoiled for something I tend to stay away from places that could post them.

I try not to spoil other because I think it's rude, but

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't usually mind getting spoiled and in some cases I'll seek spoilers out. This is partly due to my ability to put them in that same short-term memory place as any recent unremarkable weather - like, I know there was weather, I can tell you the general trends, and if pushed I might be able to tell you what it was like several days ago, but I won't remember any specifics.

I don't mind them, still gotta watch the thing to see how it came about. Not going to hinge my enjoyment on one tiny thing. I'm more interested in the lead up.

I've got the same general dread of spoilers that most people have, and I try to avoid them, but when I think about the times I have been spoiled by accident, even in a big way, I realize I still enjoyed the thing completely. For instance, I read one of my favorite mangas comPLETELY out of order (was living in a rural area at the time with spotty access to bookstores and internet both, and I took what I could get when I could get it) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Did I miss a first "fresh" reading by being spoiled for future events? Maybe. But I had a damn good time all the same.

I like them. Sometimes I search for them. I can enjoy something even knowing that the butler did it.

If I'm watching a show/movie or reading a book, I stay away from forums about them (Tumblr, Reddit, what have you) if I don't want to be spoiled. I think people who expect to not be spoiled but then do go on those forums are ridiculous, especially if the thing in question has been awhile* and/or they scream bloody murder at having been spoiled. And I think people who deliberately spoil things for others are first rate assholes.

*Someone got their bottoms in a bunch once about being spoiled for "The Godfather", on a fucking Godfather board. I mean wow, the movie came out in 1972 and YOU ARE ON A GODFATHER BOARD.

I seek them out. I hate surprises of any kind so I'll find out what happens before reading/watching/etc. any type of media.

I still enjoy the stories and have strong emotional reactions to them. I'd never intentionally spoil them for anyone though.

Re: Your thoughts on spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hate them. I want the first time I watch something to be going along for the ride and seeing what happens. And then getting the emotional reaction associated with that. I can then rewatch and get a different perspective of it, and see how everything fit together knowing what I know now. However, if I am spoiled, I can never get that first instinctive, emotional reaction.

My thing is that I don't understand why it is so difficult not to spoil people. I do the best I can by tumblr blacklisting things I don't want to be spoiled for, and when LJ/DW were big, I used to be good about not clicking LJ-cuts/spoiler cuts. But a lot of people wouldn't/won't/don't use them. And then there were the people who would say "OMG, Darth Vader is Luke's father!" instead of saying "In Star Wars last night, can you believe that Darth Vader is Luke's father?!" The latter one lets me see the title of the thing being discussed and not read more, whereas the former does not.

Yes, I am aware that ultimately it is my responsibility not to be spoiled. However, if something only takes a few seconds (adding tags or a cut) or a little consideration (mentioning the fandom before the spoiler) and it helps others, why is there a big push not to do it? Why are there people that purposely spoil others just for the "fun" of it. ("Because if I can enjoy something while knowing the spoilers, it shouldn't matter if you are spoiled!" or "It's your responsibility not to be spoiled and I shouldn't have to do anything!" or whatever.)

GIVE ME ALL THE SPOILERS!

I had one time I tried to avoid them, back when HBP first came out, but I had difficulty trying to read the book and the spoiler period wore out and I was like, "Why was I so fussed?".

As it is now, I like to read every spoiler to come along, and know everything beforehand, and in games, plan out how I am going to go about doing things (I love walkthroughs and strategy guides).

For instance, Dragon Age. I went through my first playthrough of Origins, constantly referring to the DA wiki for how to handle quests. I looked up events further on in the game like the Landsmeet and the romances and plotted how to get through them. This is simply the way ii play, and when I think back, I was playing like this back when I was playing Baldur's Gate as well.
When Inquisition first came out I was watching everywhere for info on it, watching the wiki as people added new info. I didn't go into deep detail of the quests, but I know most of the story pretty well. I did have a period right after it came out where I stopped reading fic and wanted to ignore it all, but that was a combination of reacting to the new canon info and dissatisfaction about not being able to play it straight away, not spoiler rage.
