I mean I'm going to college but I'm an art major so you're probably describing my future lmao. College doesn't guarantee a good job.

Re: So...

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
but why?

can't you do that learning on your own?

Re: So...

DA

Way to be completely dismissive of arts education, anon.

Eh, looking at their art, it looks like they haven't learned much.

lmao, I'm glad you cared enough to check. If you have any tips or pointers, I would be glad to hear them. :) I'm pretty comfortable admitting I'm still learning.

I'm going off of your nancreates tumblr, if you have more recent stuff, please show me.

-your posing is incredibly stiff feeling
-you rely very heavily on symbol drawing and seems like you have little experience drawing from life
-too little variation in your colors, not enough contrast in your shading, and pretty worried you haven't applied color theory at all to your stuff
-do even try drawing backgrounds?

this is after at least a year of schooling, right?

if you're going into illustration, i highly suggest either working your ass off by studying independently because your classes clearly aren't cutting it or switching your major

do you carry around a sketchbook or draw from life? if not get to it

(even if you're going for a cartoony style, it helps)

I absolutely agree with most of this. Particularly the colors; I really do limit my art in terms of colors. I keep meaning to do those palette challenges (and in fact took a lot of requests here) to break of the monotony of my color usage.

I do carry a sketchbook around but I admit to doodling in it more than anything else. XD;; But I'll start making drawing from life more of a priority. Could you explain what you mean by symbol drawing? Never mind, I figured this one out.

I'm not sure if you were trying to be mean or if you were actually interested in helping out, but either way thanks. :)

I have to say I admire the class with which you take criticism, even harsh criticism. I respect that partly because it feels like it's a rare quality.

Thanks. I have to admit, for about five minutes I was devastated but there's truth in that anons words so while I didn't like the delivery, I appreciated the message. :)

Classiest response to a dickish troll that I've seen! Though seriously, they were just being a dick.

Thanks! That anon was telling the truth in what I need to work on but I know I'm progressing and that's what's important. :)

The reason we have tools is so we can do things more effectively, more easily, and more efficiently than we could do without them.

This is, like, a basic principle of human life.

Haha, I have been asked this by so many people. This and "well what are you going to do with that?" It gets annoying after a while and is usually asked by people who want to criticize my choices (not saying you are, just that there's a lot of concern trolls out there).

Because I wanted to. Because my age cut the tuition in half so I'm gaining very little debt and I wanted to take advantage of that. Because my school does a good job networking and meeting prospective employers (even though haha, obviously jobs are hard to come by in this field). Because I learn better when I'm forced to do it. Because I wanted credentials behind my name when I start working on character art and illustration. Because my first go round with college was for something I cared very little for so I wanted to experience majoring in something I actually wanted to do.

High five! I love history. I was pretty tempted to minor in it for a while.
