Re: Pet Peeves Thread

The fact that the "welcome to the internet" attitude tends to allow people act horribly rude and sometimes downright shitty so often that it feels like they're starting to feel entitled to it. Like it's their right. Sometimes it gets so awful that when someone like a mod steps in and enforces rules about behavior, it's treated like some gross violation of human rights.

People seems to have this idea that the world owes it to them to always allow them to say what they want. if someone enforces rules and tells them "no there are rules in this community and you're breaking them" they have a rampage.

See: the whole fatpeoplehate debacle on reddit.

Sometimes I wonder if the freedom and anonymity of the internet just enables people with a predisposition to this. makes me worry how many people will take this attitude to real life. Are we conditioning a generation of people to believe that they can say whatever the hell they want even if they're being horrible little shits?

The internet seems a hell of a lot stricter on this today than it used to be, in my experience?

Depends on where you go.

I'm with you on this - it's just so lazy and rude! "welcome to the internet" should not be a get out of jail free card so you can be a cunt to strangers.

Yeah also, forgive me if I sound like the "think of the children" type but...I can't imagine it will have a good impact on children who use it.

I mean yeah parents should monitor their kids activity online, but realistically how many people do that? (look at how much shit teenage tumblrinas get away with).

But yeah main problem is it's lazy and rude.
