Right now it would be the stupid bar exam that is so heavily weighted on financial stuff and on stuff that has nothing to do with what I actually want to do. Like, why can't they have different versions of the exam based on the areas of law people actually want to practice in? Cramming all this stuff in my head that I'll never use again and that are not stuff that come naturally to me is so freaking frustrating.

My brother is taking the bar soon, and he has ranted SO MUCH about all the stupid requirements for wills. Also, he knows zilch about professional responsibilities and ethics, which seems like kind of a bad sign to me.

Lawyer here - I actually think it's kind of neat that we're trained to be able to practice any area of law. That weird crap about trusts and estates and property will pop back into your head someday when you least expect it.

The civil engineering exam is the same way. I taught myself things just to pass the exam, it's stuff I never even learned in school and will literally never use in my job.

But I passed so that's all that matters to me.

The fact that the "welcome to the internet" attitude tends to allow people act horribly rude and sometimes downright shitty so often that it feels like they're starting to feel entitled to it. Like it's their right. Sometimes it gets so awful that when someone like a mod steps in and enforces rules about behavior, it's treated like some gross violation of human rights.

People seems to have this idea that the world owes it to them to always allow them to say what they want. if someone enforces rules and tells them "no there are rules in this community and you're breaking them" they have a rampage.

See: the whole fatpeoplehate debacle on reddit.

Sometimes I wonder if the freedom and anonymity of the internet just enables people with a predisposition to this. makes me worry how many people will take this attitude to real life. Are we conditioning a generation of people to believe that they can say whatever the hell they want even if they're being horrible little shits?

The internet seems a hell of a lot stricter on this today than it used to be, in my experience?

I'm with you on this - it's just so lazy and rude! "welcome to the internet" should not be a get out of jail free card so you can be a cunt to strangers.

This old church outside my window. It does the stupid bell thing, where it rings every fifteen minutes and on the hour, DONGs the number of the hour. Most clocktower/churches I've been around stop at 10pm and start again at 8am. Not this bastard, no. He keeps on going all damn night long. Fuck you church bell! Fuck you!

Wanna move into the apartment unit next to mine? If a certain asshole doesn't knock off the nocturnal bass-capades, I suspect we'll have an opening here soon.

And then he can move where you are and know what it's like to be kept up by a noisy thing that won't knock it the fuck off.

Re: Pet Peeves Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
aren't there noise laws that would regulate that?

Nosy anons like some of the ones in the driving thread the other day. It seemed like they saw someone talking about not being able to drive, and then jumped on them about "well then how do you get place? Do you use public transport? Do you rely on friends? well...if so"

Like I know some of the defensive responses got really awful, and yes it is a good point that you can't take your friends' help for granted.

But I still feel like some of the anons shoved their nose into someone else's personal business. Like ...it's not really your place to lecture a stranger on their transportation needs and their relationships with friends when it has nothing to do with you.

Re: Pet Peeves Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
man you can't get over that thread, can you?

And I don't recall it ever once getting "nosy". There was a general topic and people discussed it anonymously, and certain people really, REALLY didn't like what other people were saying.

I agree with you; they were taking it way too personally. Like, yeah, it sucks that you know assholes who try to take advantage of you, but guess what: some people don't actually mind helping out their friends/family, and it makes no sense to assume all non-drivers are the exact same way.

I mean, either way, it's a hell of a lot better to harass people to drive you places than get behind the wheel and end up killing people, isn't it?

When people try talking to you when you have headphones in. Especially after you tell them you are listening to something and they just want to chat about nothing.

My gawd, yes. Just today I had this dude basically gesture to me he wants to ask something...to which he proceeds to ask if I had a boyfriend. Grrr. Like, I'm a nice person. I take into account that some people might genuinely have a problem. But sometimes humanity tests my patience.

Cab drivers are the worst about this. If I'm taking a taxi at the end of the day it's because I'm exhausted and can barely function long enough to get home -- I'm not up for small talk.

This happens to me with Mum. She suddenly feels like talking her head off about something and I have head/earphones in and only catch a vague impression of her speaking and I'm like, "...What?".
