When people try talking to you when you have headphones in. Especially after you tell them you are listening to something and they just want to chat about nothing.

My gawd, yes. Just today I had this dude basically gesture to me he wants to ask something...to which he proceeds to ask if I had a boyfriend. Grrr. Like, I'm a nice person. I take into account that some people might genuinely have a problem. But sometimes humanity tests my patience.

I don't even mind if people want to talk, but don't start walking as soon as I put my damn headphones in! Especially after I say I am going to listen to a podcast. Also, don't be surprised when I have to ask you to repeat yourself when I take them out.

See, and my pet peeve is people wearing headphones in public.

...why?

Re: Pet Peeves Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It contributes to the general obliviousness of the human population. I mean, I don't care if you're on public transport or something. You've had your interactions, you've sat down, now people can leave you in peace. But walking around a store or mall or what have you with headphones in is just this advertisement that you don't want to be bothered with other people. Yet you're out in public. I think people can suck up having to deal with their surroundings for an hour or two in order to increase the level of interactiveness and kindness in the world.

Yeah, I'm in public because I need to eat and buy clothes. I DON'T want to be bothered by other people but I also don't want to walk around naked or starve to death.

Well, I don't want to be bothered by other people when I'm at the store.

Um, why?

If it's for safety reasons (worried about them not paying attention to where they're going and hurting themselves or someone else) then I could SORT of understand. (But even if you're wearing headphones, that doesn't mean the volume has to be up so loud that you can't hear your surroundings.)

I've had people look at me funny for listening to music in the waiting room of a doctors office though, and to me that's just silly. (I've also had people talk about me whilst I was doing it, like, "Oh, kids these days, always glued to their cell phones" and I almost blurted out, "You do know I can still hear, right?" Next time I'm going to.)

You sound like someone I know who called me an asshole for doing that.

Fuck off, I don't want to hear the echos of five screaming babies that are somehow always at Walmart.

Well, I wouldn't call someone an asshole, so not quite. I am showing my age, though - it's only in very recent years that it has even been possible for humans to tune out the world around them, and I think it's not a good trend. You're out in public. Interact with the world. Be aware of your surroundings. You might even learn to deal with being uncomfortable sometimes.

Re: Pet Peeves Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but nah, fuck that, mate

I'm completely capable of dealing with being uncomfortable in public and dealing with the world. But when I'm taking the exact same half-hour train ride every weekday morning, I don't particularly feel the need to avoid zoning out and I'm totally fine with tuning out my surroundings and listening to some music. Don't really give a shit about it, honeslty.

As I said above, I completely understand the use/utility of personal entertainment on public transport. It's not really any different than me listening to the radio in my car.

ayrt saying, again, fuck off.

Screaming babies and kids are my ultimate rage button, a lot of it due to the shitty parenting in the city I live in, and Walmart is so huge it amplifies them.

I'm forced to deal with it at work. I'm forced to deal with it at home with my uncle forcing his brat kid on my retired mom to watch. I deal with it just fine when I have to.

I'm not going to be forced to listen to it when I'm in a position to change things. You're damn right I'm going to wear my headphones to drive out the noise. What the hell do you even mean by 'interact with the world' in my context anyway? I'm at the grocery store, no one's there for ~social interaction~.

Re: Pet Peeves Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, my life is too busy for me to read all the stories I want to so I listen to podcasts while I'm doing other things. It's not like I have no human interaction ever. I just enjoy myself in my own way when I'm doing mundane things. And I'm plenty aware of my surroundings.

I understand what you are saying and partly agree, but I feel you underestimate how aware one can be of the world around even with music playing. Your eyes don't stop seeing, your brain doesn't stop processing.

I like listening to music when I go out, but if I am going to talk to someone directly, I will pull the earphones out, and I pay attention to things like traffic and other pedestrians, sometimes doubly so because I am very aware that I am blocking one sense.

You sound quite polite and self-aware, unlike some of the anons in this thread.

Yes, well I don't see the point of being belligerent, I prefer to just lay out my thoughts in a calm manner.

Stick five fingers in your ass, no lube.
So what'cha gonna do?
If you're number one, shove it up your ass and make it number 2.

This. And people who try to talk to you when you're clearly reading. If you've got something important or even interesting to say, go for it! If you just want to make conversation, go somewhere else. The book is a SIGN

Cab drivers are the worst about this. If I'm taking a taxi at the end of the day it's because I'm exhausted and can barely function long enough to get home -- I'm not up for small talk.

This happens to me with Mum. She suddenly feels like talking her head off about something and I have head/earphones in and only catch a vague impression of her speaking and I'm like, "...What?".
