Re: Pet Peeves Thread

Nosy anons like some of the ones in the driving thread the other day. It seemed like they saw someone talking about not being able to drive, and then jumped on them about "well then how do you get place? Do you use public transport? Do you rely on friends? well...if so"

Like I know some of the defensive responses got really awful, and yes it is a good point that you can't take your friends' help for granted.

But I still feel like some of the anons shoved their nose into someone else's personal business. Like ...it's not really your place to lecture a stranger on their transportation needs and their relationships with friends when it has nothing to do with you.

man you can't get over that thread, can you?

And I don't recall it ever once getting "nosy". There was a general topic and people discussed it anonymously, and certain people really, REALLY didn't like what other people were saying.

Um....what do you mean. I haven't posted anything about it before. I just thought some people came off really nosy.

It's not that I disagree with what they were saying or their points. But I just felt like the way they went about it comes off nosy.

maybe it wasn't you, but I feel like someone's been bringing up this topic multiple times in the GC since it happened, which is boggling consider the thread imo was not aggressive at all, except for the anon who got pissed off and started wishing death/paralysis on people

I dunno I also felt "you're loved ones will get sick of you and leave you, and they'll be right to. is equally aggressive in a way. Maybe I'm just someone who worried about losing people but that just feels like a rotten thing to say to someone, based on their assumptions.

No one said that though? They said no one is obligated to give you a ride. Not that they'll LEAVE you (where did you get that?), but that they might start denying rides or asking for gas money each time (and they wouldn't be bad people for doing so either).

And no, it is not equally aggressive to that other person, not at all. Especially since the other person was just being bitchy and attacking, whereas people on the other side were just discussing a topic.

Still, it started out with the anon replyiing practically grilling them on how they get their rides. Maybe you think it's okay, but they were rude. Sorry you can't accept it.

here. Here's my problem with it. Agree disagree I don't care. But I think you're being mighty hypocritical to claim that only ONE side was wrong.

Lol no need to post your reply that's literally right below this.

And only one side was wrong, and that was the jerk who was wishing death/paralysis on others. I don't recall ANY grilling, just general discussing about people who do not drive. Maybe you took it personally, but the "you" was general to the discussion that was happen through the entire comments. No grilling. And even if they did, so what? It's other people who brought it up. If it's a topic of anonymous online discussion then people should be able to talk about it in whatever way they want as long as they refrain from being assholes (which again, only one side did). You don't get to say "I don't drive, I take rides from others and don't compensate them" and then expect people NOT to talk about it.

Nayrt

I don't think people were getting nosy either, but the thread was only two days ago. That's not really at the "can't get over it" level yet.

I agree with you; they were taking it way too personally. Like, yeah, it sucks that you know assholes who try to take advantage of you, but guess what: some people don't actually mind helping out their friends/family, and it makes no sense to assume all non-drivers are the exact same way.

I mean, either way, it's a hell of a lot better to harass people to drive you places than get behind the wheel and end up killing people, isn't it?

Yeah.

My problem with it was "....you're a random stranger on the internet who doesn't know this person or their friends or family. It's not your place to lecture the person about it."

Maybe it's because since I was a kid I was taught to not get involved in something if I don't know both sides of the story or have nothing to do with it, unless I KNOW it will involve someone getting hurt".

Those anons cannot speak for the loved ones of the person they were speaking to. They have nothing to do with them . If there is a problem it is up to that person's loved ones to talk to them. Even if the non-driving person didn't listen it is up to them or someone else in their life to deal with that.

Not some stranger who doesn't know any of them and isn't effected by any of it.

For me this isn't about whose side was right and whose was wrong. It was that the people asking the nondrivers about their transportation were shoving their nose in someone else's business to lecture them.

Maybe if the non-drivers had brought up something that indicated they were taking advantage of their loved ones, or that they even fully depended on people all the time in the first place. That doesn't seem like casual conversation to me. It looks like someone bursting in looking for an opportunity to lecture them about how no one owes them anything.

It was basic projection tbh. That person has a problem with their friends but can't talk to them, so it's easier to take it out on random anons online.
