Why? What will happen if he stops making movies?

He'll stop ruining scripts and concepts that might otherwise be good, and the money that's spent on making his movies will go towards movies that have the potential to be watchable

unfortunately he owns his own production company, no matter if his movies bomb or not so long as he has money he can keep making more, no studio approval necessary

I haven't done the research so I might be wrong here, but I would wager a fair bit of money that most of his stuff is co-productions with a bunch of different companies and he's not really financing most of his movies single-handedly, with maybe a few exceptions.
