Eh, I don't think wish fulfillment is the right word. Not all the fics I write are things I wish had happened in canon, in fact, most of them aren't. They're just imaginative what-ifs.

I also don't know why people act like their pairings are better than others', but not all fanfiction is pairings. Do you mean all ships are wish fulfillment? Also not the case always for me, since I often write pairings I don't "ship", like in non-con scenarios and such.

Amusingly enough the chances of quality vs crap do seem to skew higher that way (exceptions are when the book is reprinted due to popularity of a TV show or movie adaptation, like my original copy of The Stand came with a cover based on the tv show with Gary Sinise.)

That's fair enough. (Not that I haven't seen non-canon pairings get criticized, but you're right in that even if one interpretation is more popular than others, there's probably going to be a bigger variety because the pairing isn't 'set in stone'.)

I love playing as the overpowered MC too. (Hello BioWare!) It's fun.

I feel you, though. I love angst involving the MC, often just as much as angst with your party members. Rarely is there enough of it. (And sometimes the seemingly well adjusted, upbeat characters are the ones who bottle up their emotions the most.)

TBH anon, if someone came down tomorrow and said they could wave a magic wand at me and I'd have everything "fixed" up, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Yeah, it won't really happen and there are less and more sensitive ways to handle it, but if a 'verse has properties that allow disabilities to be instantly healed (like hellooooo, guys, even the Bible has it!), go for it, just don't trivialize the struggles the disabled person has had to face before being zapped.
