But, even if you were disabled yourself, if you didn't agree, you obviously had internal ableism. A lot of it was coming from people who had been disabled since birth (usually the same group that argues for the term "differently abled", which a fuckton of us find offensive as hell), and thus never experienced growing up able-bodied and then becoming disabled. I'm not a full-time wheelchair user (part time, although I've not had to in awhile now, yay), but I've been dependent on a cane, and in chronic pain since I was 18 (I'm 30), which has fucked my life over like whoa. So, hell yes, I would take a cure for that. Because, having your joints partially dislocate well over 50 times a day is kinda hell.

If it comes up I tend to take the time to tell people that that vocal minority doesn't reflect the attitudes of all disabled people. It's truly shitty though, because it's pervasive and it causes a lot of newly disabled people to feel guilty and ostracized if they make the mistake of seeking support in the wrong circles.
It's a shitty attitude and fuck the people who want to make it the mainstream. You don't need to be proud of something that actively lessens your quality of life and you don't need to embrace it either.
