The only people that thought that was racist were Americans. Actual Japanese people loved it and though Americans were, as usual, acting like they knew better than the actual cultures.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not a good song, but from what I know it was directed by a Japanese director and targeted toward her Japanese fans, as she's a big deal in Japan. It wasn't even "for" her American audiences. It was pretty blatantly in the style of J-pop, very Kyary Pamu Pamu or however you spell her name. The "going to eat sushi all alone and squeeing over it" thing kind of made me cringe but the rest of the music video just seemed exactly the genre she was going for.

DA

HDU IMPLY NOT EVERYTHING IS MADE FOR MURICAN AUDIENCES

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Implying that there are actual other countries with different cultural sensibilities, and not just (always pissy) minority populations in the USA who alone define what "Japanese," "Korean," and "African" mean: Officially Tunblr-racist since 2011.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
B-b-but! As an american, I have the right to tell other countries what they should be offended about! HOW WILL THEY KNOW IF I DON'T TELL THEM>?!?!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
but Avril Lavigne is Canadian, not Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah that was hilarious seeing the reactions of actual Japanese people.

Also I found it incredibly cringey to see American SJWs actually LECTURE Japanese people on why they should be offended.

Someone needs to tell the SJWs to stay in THEIR lane.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
well, in fairness, Japanese people are mostly really racist, so they're probably not the best judges

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

racist or no, I think the people of the original culture are the best judges for whether their culture is being appropriated or not

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
but appropriation and racism are two different things (though sometimes related)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
then racist or no, I think the people of the original culture are the best judges for whether their culture is being mocked or shamed or not

imagine the SJW outrage if a white people informed a black people they should be offended because white people know better than black people do about racis

oh wait. they do that. never mind, carry on, no wonder they think its fine

I can't get over this post.

"Japanese people are mostly really racist" is such a racist statement in and of itself that I'm still laughing.

Imagine someone saying "black people are mostly really racist, so they're probably not the best judges" or "the Roma are mostly really racist."

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But the Japanese ARE really racist. Ask a Korean, they'll tell you.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny because the Korean guy I worked with LOVED and admired the Japanese -- we bonded over our shared love of anime.

But when I mentioned having worked with a Chinese woman, he went on a rant about the "dirty Chinese."

Maybe don't generalize?

Ehhhhh they kinda are. Not in an intentional way (mostly) but in a very unaware of international social custom and what actually constitutes racism in other cultures way.

There's also a lot of culture that encourages xenophobia. It's not strictly racist, per se, but it definitely is an issue.

As someone not-Japanese who lived and worked in Japan for a while - the Japanese culture is rather racist. They weren't charging at me with pitchforks to chase me out of town or anything, but as a whole they're very condescending towards other cultures. Not necessarily mean-spirited, but in way that's dismissive of cultures that aren't Japanese.

But anon, that's because Japanese are the majority on Japan, it's Japanese americans who are subject to the appropriation here, and the power structures involved mean that's not okay.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well.....the song was made by an artist who visited Japan for her Japanese fans, and the video was directed by someone from Japan who was Japanese.

It would be like if some artist from another country visited America and had an American fanbase of say 12 or 13 year olds and wrote a song that references a lot of popular things in American pop culture and had an American director.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you're being serious or not, but I think there's a huge difference between Avril making a j-pop style video, and Avril actually... being offensive. Like if the entirety of your complaint is "the video has things that are stereotypically Japanese" then, um, so what? Those things are not misleading, they actually are a part of Japan. Considering it was made by a Japanese director for a Japanese audience, Americans, of Japanese descent or not, need to seriously relax. It'd be one thing if she wore yellow face and enlarged her front teeth and pranced around, but the video is about Harajuku pop culture.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good grief, I was joking (http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/1253635.html?thread=851721731#cmt851721731) above, and then I see you actually went there.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, what a relief. Sorry, that came off just deadpan enough I wasn't sure.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
i actually think it's still racist... just... not in the way everyone thinks it is.
