Eh, I don't think wish fulfillment is the right word. Not all the fics I write are things I wish had happened in canon, in fact, most of them aren't. They're just imaginative what-ifs.

I also don't know why people act like their pairings are better than others', but not all fanfiction is pairings. Do you mean all ships are wish fulfillment? Also not the case always for me, since I often write pairings I don't "ship", like in non-con scenarios and such.

I kind of see where OP is coming from because even if you don't want the thing to happen in canon, you still desire to read about it; it still appeals to you on some level and gives you something the canon doesn't, you know? I've certainly read and enjoyed fic for stuff I would never want to become canon, but the fic satisfied a need I had, sometimes separate from canon. (That probably makes no sense as I'm shit at explanations.)

But I do agree that people who are hostile to others for shipping and have some odd sense of superiority because of it are unpleasant. It's silly to get that worked up over what other people like.

You can repeat that all you want, but it doesn't stop me from side-eyeing teacher-student or incest romance stories any more than in regular fiction.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You can side eye all you want. People will still write them and no one can make them stop.

Didn't we have this discussion yesterday? Pretty sure we did.

Sorry, KakaSaku is ten times better than SasuSaku. Fucking fact.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Equal amounts of complete suck.

Nope. Sorry. Kakashi didn't abuse the hell out of her or his supposed best friend the entire run.

You know, whenever people are all "eww eww don't people realize Thor/Loki is INCEST? And incest are BAD?! I have some pearls to clutch" I kind of want to link them the seriously gross frequently racist torture erotica I've encountered in the depths of the internet. But then their pearls might shatter from being clutched too hard.

I agree with the sentiment of this because a large part of fanfic is wish-fufillment on some level(whether it's GEN, shippy or smut), and I genuinely don't care what other people ship or enjoy in ficiton. So long as they're having fun it's all good. But sadly people like to get really judgy and superior over the dumbest shit(just look at fans of rival sports teams irl).

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The phrase "wish fulfillment," comes across as condescending, I'm superior to you because I don't engage in that silly fantasy. I'm better because I "respect the creator."

Huh, fair enough, I don't mean it in a condescending manner because wish fulfilment can be fun and I enjoy fanfic a lot, plus there a lot of canon works could be considered wish fulfilment as well, doesn't make them bad for being so though.

Yeahbut....some people's wishes are stupid. So there!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you tag your shit correctly so I don't stumble into something I despise, I'm with you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"All fanfiction is wish fulfillment at some level."

Ima stop you right there.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
How is it not?

Don't tell me you're doing it for the art.

But my pairing IS better than yours!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Kidding. People like feeling superior over other people, if it's not pairings, it's their choice in music or movies or food or art or cars or phones or, well, anything else where you make a choice. Everybody does it about something, though if they aren't too pretentious and/or self-involved, they generally realize that they aren't actually the arbiter of other people's taste.

People like being right

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, really, that's it. Whether that means winning an argument, successfully predicting an outcome for a canon, being morally correct, whatever. People just like to be on the winning side, and they get really smug about it.
