Except that such spaces can contribute to the fantasy.

For starters, they're open and echoey enough that it can feel almost like public sex. They are usually dirty and often contain dangerous things (broken glass, metal things, hulking equipment). In such a clandestine space, need trumps comfort.

It's a very specific frisson, and generally much different than engaging in the exact same acts in a posh hotel room.

... and empty boxes, visually, carry a pretty good symbolic kick.

What is the symbolism? The boxes just appeared in the fantasy. I never considered there was any meaning to them.

Oh, I dunno, sometimes a box is just a box, right? But a few things that come to mind as sort of, uh, metaphorical jumping-off places:

1. The boxes are empty; people talk about feeling empty inside.
2. The boxes were meant to contain things; since they're empty, perhaps what was once contained is now "loose" ?
3. Empty boxes aren't currently fulfilling their purpose.
4. Boxes are often in our lives when we are in transition (e.g., moving boxes).

Finally, boxes make great spaceships; ask Spaceman Spiff.

My fantasy is the hotel room, which is so boring I even feel embarrassed about it.

Occasionally I mix it up with some empty multi storey car parks. Then back to the hotel rooms again.

Several pf my fandoms involve apocalyptic settings so every building is pretty much abandoned and run-down. It made sense in that context but for some reason the warehouse setting has been showing up in my other fantasies as well.
