Autistics who think they're not suffering...maybe just aren't suffering. Please don't start this disgusting "you need to go away because you're a burden on the rest of us bullshit."

Autistic people who are able to function in daily life, and hold jobs on their own and stuff don't need to be cured. If they want it that's fine.

The ones who need it the most are the ones who can't speak because of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

There's a difference between functioning and enjoying life though. And someone who is lacking something may very well not have the ability to recognize that they're lacking it.

For example, I think it'd be pretty heinous if, say, a cure is found for deafness that MUST be administered in utero and deaf parents refuse to allow it. They're basically denying their child the ability to hear for nothing.

I can't see that as anything but wrong on their part.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That takes away the agency of the child, and the adult they will become though. And if you know anything about Deaf culture, you would know that CoDAs (hearing children of Deaf adults) have a much harder time in life than Deaf children born to Deaf adults. (Check out Lane's writing, for example.)

I'm deaf/hard of hearing (sorry SJWs but that was the PC term in my day and I haaaaaaaaate the phrase "hearing impaired") not Deaf, though, so I may be talking out my backside. But there is a fine line between "cure ALL the things" and becoming the Borg. Where humanity ends up going with that, I couldn't say.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a disease, not a community.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, no? I'm deaf because of my congenital genetic disorder, not a disease. And the Deaf community is legitimately a community. Soooo 0/10?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think most people care about the difference between a disorder and disease, lets just use the lay meaning and leave the hair splitting behind us. The deaf "community" is a response to the disease, to ameliorate its effects. If it starts retarding efforts to cure deafness instead of helping the sufferers bear it, and try and work around it, then the community has become as much a problem as deafness itself.

God dammit I want to agree with you (I'm deaf too for those of you just tuning in) but you're phrasing everything in such amazingly douchey ways.

...only I'm not suffering, just because I'm deaf. It would be the same thing as me saying to you, "you're suffering because you have blue eyes, and we should eradicate all the blue eyes from people".

But you're legit trolling now, so w/e bro.

I disagree on the statement that a disorder is the same as a disease. It's simply incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
TBH "hearing impaired" has been a term since at least the late 1970s

dude, we make medical decisions for kids all the time

their "agency" means nothing if it's something they would never be able to choose as an adult anyway

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Autistic people who are able to function and aren't a constant shrieking life-ruining burden aren't who we're talking about, so cool your shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"life ruining burden"

You're still fucking being disgusting there. Taking about disabled people as if they're not human and then pulling the "BUT I CARE ABOUT THEIR CARETAKERS" argument is still being massively ableist.

It's not wrong to care about the families. But using that as an excuse to treat a human being as if they're subhuman is fucking ableism. That's the kind of attitude that gets disabled people murdered and their murderers let off scott free.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck you. I went through hell at school because my grother was one of those supposed high functioning autistics who got off on spouting his own brand of master race crap, all us "neurotypicals" were beneath him and we'd all be slaves when the world recognized his genius. He had as much awareness of what that was doing to the rest of the family as your average mushroom. His behavior got me beat up on a daily basis and excluded from every social circle, and it basically drove our parents to divorce. If there was a cure to make sure he'd stop ruining the lives of others, and could spare any other family going through that hell, then I'd have it used in a microsecond. Hell, I'd hold him down and do it myself if I could. It was just a shame there wasn't a home we could have dumped him in, and god knows but my dad looked for one.

Wow "fuck you" because I'm against treating someone as subhuman?

I'm sorry your brother was a dickbag. but that doesn't mean it's right to treat disabled people as subhuman.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm concerned, they are.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well sorry but thinking an entire group of people is subhuman makes you a bigot.

Having a bad experience with a member of a group doesn't give you the right to take away the humanity of everyone else like that.

I'm a high-functioning autistic, and had uncles on both sides of my family that were the same. They lived relatively normal lives and were mostly noteworthy for being awkward and uncomfortable at family gatherings. They certainly never mentioned any ridiculously disgusting master race bullshit. One liked to cook and always gave me books as presents. The other had retired from the US Navy and owned a bike store with his wife.

And if I'd ever mentioned anything about high-functioning autistics being the rightful rulers of the world, I would've been (rightfully) soundly mocked and probably had my faced punched in. I was and sometimes still am an annoying walking encyclopedia of weird facts and dumb trivia. But I try not to be an asshole, because it is possible to learn how not to be one.

Your brother sounds like an ass, but tbh it sounds like a family tendency. Nothing like "we were gonna dump you in a home, but no-one would take you because you're a nutcase" and "how's it feel knowing you ruined my life and our parent's marriage, you freak?" to shore up your brother's mental stability and show him how to be an empathetic human being.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah seriously That's what I thought. My experience has been that thinking your a genius can be a defense mechanism against people who treat you like the opposite all the time. And with the OP's attitude it sounds like they would have a hell of an inferiority complex.

Honestly OP sounds just as bad,e specially with the "if I could I would force a cure on him, he ruined my family's life woe is me". I mean the fact that OP takes such offense to the mere idea that autistics aren't subhuman.

I bet OP was a hell of a bully themselves to their sibling.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
People here need to stop using their shitty relatives as justification for ableism. Your attitude is still shit.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Relax, guy. I'm not going to murder my disabled family members. I'm just not going to interact with them at all unless/until I can be sure that it's safe for them to be left unattended around knives and matches.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying. People have used that kind of thinking as justification for murdering disabled people.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
People have also used a crush on Jodie Foster as a justification for murder, so what's your point?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Shut the fuck up, precious.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-07-25 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Great response.

Can you explain what's wrong with it? Just saying "shut up" is a weak argument.
