imo swearing is good, and cool

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you anon

idk, I liked the swearing, even if it was over the top, maybe because it was over the top. I didn't feel like any of it was meant to be taken seriously, and I kind of felt about it the same way I feel about Hot Fuzz, that's really just a send-up of action/spy movies and its ridiculous tropes.

My fav insults though were about Rose Byrne's hair.

I absolutely lost it during Jason Statham's first rant (the one where he claims to have sewed his own arm back on) because of how many times he said fuck/fucking. It was so ridiculous, I laughed until I cried.

I thought the swearing was hilarious, especially when you could see her taking a second to come up with something totally absurd.

I agree that calling men pussies is hypocritical, to say the least.

I need to see this...

But what's wrong with the swearing? (Like, was it creative swearing, or was there just a shitload of it?) Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I don't have a problem with swearing as long as it doesn't seem forced.

Sometimes when it's every other word it gets kind of ridiculous (though that might very well be the point), but a character having a potty mouth won't automatically turn me off.

The other concerns I can understand.

being a respectable lady, I love calling men pussies and cunts and bitches

but I totally get and respect why some people hate those words
after all, they're loaded words and should be treated as such

Wait, who's the beautiful, confident, successful woman that we're not suppose to think is a bitch? Rayna?

I loooved the swearing, I thought everyone in this movie pulled it off so well.

Idk, I realize a lot of people hate the word pussy as an insult and I've tried so hard to also hate it but damn, it makes me laugh when women use it. It's such a double standard though because I hate it when men use it.

It's Morena Baccarin's character, isn't it? When they're in the restaurant near the beginning?

spoilers for this movie!

[personal profile] nanslice 2015-07-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OOOOH right. I forgot about her, haha. She wasn't really presented as a bitch until her double cross though, right? I thought we were suppose to find Susan's jealousy of her petty and dumb (and funny). Or is it the fact that she was a double agent at all that was the problematic issue?

idk, I've only watched the movie the once time when it first came out.

I've only seen the movie once myself so my memory's a bit hazy, but I seem to remember Susan and Nancy calling her a bitch behind her back in that scene and I figure it's the word itself that OP objects to. Presented as an acceptable way for the hero to refer to someone, and all. If that's the case, I agree with OP, although I guess one could also argue that their jealousy is petty, like you said, and getting past those feelings is part of their character development.

I don't think she was presented as a bitch, but Susan and Nancy's vicious hatred of her due entirely to her "perfection" seemed to me to encourage the whole "women are jealous and catty with other women" for no reason. I thought the whole point of that would be that Susan would realize she was being petty or that Karen (still giggling that her name was Karen Walker btw) would turn out to be awesome and helpful or whatever, but then she turned out to be a double agent and Jude Law's character killed her, so it comes across uncomfortably as though we were supposed to think Susan was in the right for hating her for absolutely no reason.

I thought it was going to be subverted when Karen remembered Susan and Nancy's names after they said she wouldn't remember their names. Kinda disappointing it didn't follow through.

And by the way, the fart joke in that scene did not add anything at all.

A picture has never made me want to watch a movie so much but there we go I must see it now to put this lady into context.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking ADORED this movie but what REALLY bugged me was the running joke of Aldo sexually harrassing Susan. I really didn't like being encouraged to think situations that can make women feel very uncomfortable and powerless were merely worthy of laughs as if it was no big deal.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-07-26 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was to highlight that she's hot? Idk, it just never hit that creepy vibe with me. Maybe it's my personal experience talking... all subjective.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-27 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
What bugged me about that was that it probably wouldn't have been done the same way, or come across the same way, if Susan were conventionally attractive.

/next day reply

still loved the movie but yeah it's a guilty pleasure

I'm rolling my eyes at you but, if that stuff bothers you, I can't change it.

As a man I can say that most men don't really get upset over gendered insults being hurled our way. Call us pussies or dicks and we don't care. But I know they bother others, especially those dealing with gender issues, so I avoid them around people who might take issue.

That said, I think we need to refer to more women as dicks. There are a lot of women who are total dicks and I don't mean that in a positive manner. No one likes a dick or a pussy.
