JL3001 is classic Keith Giffen, I love it.

I would recommend the current run on Batgirl as well as Gotham Academy.

I'm actually taking a break from DC, however (I'm a good 2-3 months behind again lol) to focus on reading some old Marvel classics like Frank Miller's Daredevil run, which was actually really really good. I'm now reading the original Secret Wars, which is really really bad lol

I've heard bad things about the current Batgirl run, like it is really denigrating of Batgirl and kinda transphobic too. How bad is it? I know there was a couple of big shitstorms over it.

I did look at Gotham Academy, but the art style put me off a bit and it seems kinda continuity heavy.

I haven't read the last couple issues of Batgirl, but the transphobic thing stemmed from a storyline where someone was posing as a very glittery Batgirl and committing crimes; it turned out to be a dude doing an art stunt. A lot of people viewed that as transphobic and the author said it wasn't meant to be but apologized anyway (which got the hate freaks upset at the idea of treating transgender people and their supporters like human beings.) The other shitstorm had to do with an alternative cover for an issue that tied in with the Batman Endgame event. In the covers for many of the other Batfamily books the Joker menaced this character or that character, but the one for Batgirl specifically referenced The Killing Joke (which sucks and I hate it) and a lot of people were upset by how utterly rapey it seemed, the hate freaks caught wind of that and started sending death threats to the people who were upset and the artist requested the cover not be run with the issue (which only stirred up the hate freaks even more.)

It's honestly a really good book despite those hiccups and a major improvement from Gail Simone's gloom-and-doom run which was admittedly editorially mandated.

And Gotham Academy is pretty self-contained, don't worry. It's still quite new.

Ah, that doesn't sound too bad then. I'll still skip Gotham Academy though, sorry. I think I like more traditionally drawn comics, but I think that DC trying it is a good thing though. They were really insular for a long time and it is nice to seem them push the limits a bit.

Yeah there was a period for a few years both before and after the New 52 started where the target auddience was Dan Didio and I'm glad to see that's coming to an end. Now if only WB would take a hint from the comics and apply the concept to the movies (though Suicide Squad looks fun.)

Yeah the movie target audience is Snyder and Snyder's family.

Don't listen to them.
