Re: Petty bitching thread

My sympathies. In your shoes, I'd be tempted to ask my dad directly why it's so important to him that I need to be ashamed or embarrassed about my weight. If I were feeling spiteful (which I often am) I'd also be tempted to pick out a physical characteristic of his and bring it up every and every time he got on me about my weight.

Or I suppose if I didn't want to be quite that aggressive, I'd say, with a bored expression. "I know I'm overweight. You mention it a lot, so I understand it's important to you, but I'm not really interested in this topic" followed by an abrupt change of subject (don't even try to be subtle) and/or leaving the room (not in a huff, just a bored, meandering way).

I think he thinks it's important because he's saving me from health problems. The thing is my health/eating problems are tied to my emotional problems. I eat more than I should because of stress sometimes. But usually that's dismissed as an excuse and never touched on. In a household where I'm often shouted down and not allowed to say even an angry word at my parents , there's lots of stress.

The latter is probably the best choice. Or ignoring him.

Yeah, that happens a lot, I'm sorry. Some people really do NOT get it. I pretty much told my mother this:

"I have a bad habit of eating when I'm stressed. When you yell at me or try to embarrass me about being overweight, it doesn't make me want to exercise or stop eating, it makes me want to eat more. If you want to help me, stop doing that. If you just want to vent your frustrations at me, then understand that you're making it worse, not better."

But when you're stuck in a household like yours, all you can do sometimes is keep your head down, formulate your plan for escape and get the hell out.

Yeah. That's what I'm working on now. I bought myself an andriod phone recently so I don't have to worry as much when they use internet access as a threat. I'm working on saving money once some bills get worked out.

Smart move, and best of luck to you.
