Representation of power fantasy, of course! Men, women, and everyone in between should get to be badass heroes.

(I remember some author who got a letter about how it wasn't "realistic" for a black single mother to become a pirate queen. She responded that of course it wasn't realistic, and she didn't care.)

Like people saying that Gwen in BBC Merlin being black is unrealistic. As opposed to everything else in that series, apparently. :/

Uh...it wounds realistic to me, considering what actual pirate queens (and pirate captains generally) were like. Maybe not that exact character for some reason, but "black single mother pirate queen" sounds entirely credible.

Unless there's more than one author who's received whining about how ~unrealistic~ it is for a black single mother to be a pirate queen, they're actually a he.

(And goddamn was that verbal smackdown delightful.)
