Inspired by a secret from yesterday: Your favorite book cover art

Do you prefer older, more retro looking covers, or do you like the more contemporary "iconic" look, e.g. Twilight? Human models or no? Painted covers or photorealistic?

It depends on the book. I love the first edition covers of Wizard of Oz because that's how they were originally printed.

I like a lot of the newer covers on young adult books, they grab my attention.

I can't stand when they redo book covers for movie tie ins, no please let me just have the original cover, thanks.

I really dislike the "icon" trend. One of my favorite things used to be looking at book covers and trying to figure out what was going on in them. I like it when there's some kind of interesting scene going on, something that helps hint at the content.
I guess painted covers are my favorite.

I really love the cover of A Great and Terrible Beauty but that's because I find corsets so cool-looking.

Something where neither drawn or real people are in the picture.
I either never agree with how the characters are depicted if they appear on the cover or I get kind of influenced by the looks on the cover and then it once again turns out that actually, the characters don't look even close to what they appear like on the cover. And that's annoying.

I really love embossing on book covers. And I like it if the covers are pretty neutral, with pictures that are simplistic (and symbolic in relation to the book's content). Or patterned. I love the Penguin clothbound classics so much.

Something I really hate is when they take an old, moderately well known painting and colour parts of it differently or mess with it in some ugly way.

I love love LOVE how some publishers (I think Penguin does this?) issue editions of classic novels with old fashioned covers, cloth bound with embossed patterns. They're almost Victorian looking, and I would collect every single one just to admire if I had the money!

That one's inspired.

Have you seen the flash mob reconstruction of the painting from a couple of years ago?

I have a soft spot for the really cheesy 80's painted covers, even when they're ridiculous.

I mean, come on, which would you rather have, ridiculous 80's cheese? Or this modern mess.

I prefer nicely designed covers, which I guess would fall closest to the "iconic" look

I did a google image search for "best book covers" and basically the results are the look I personally prefer– interesting typography or imagery, no thank you to painted or photo covers. also no thank you to book covers that are just giant author names with tiny titles that tell me nothing about the contents.
