SA but you edited while I was posting so I didn't see your whole post, sorry.

my point is and was that while what you're saying is true, it's still accurate to call the movies DC movies. in the same way that I think it'd be accurate to call the X-men movies "Marvel movies". (it would be confusing for the X-Men movies in a way it wouldn't for the DC movies, because there's obviously also a lot of movies made by the Marvel studios, but it wouldn't be inaccurate - I mean, that's why we have the term Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first place, so that we can more easily distinguish between Marvel movies made by Marvel and Marvel movies that aren't).

I can appreciate and I agree with your desire to make it clear that the DC movies aren't an accurate reflection of DC comics and shouldn't be considered as definitive for the characters created and maintained by DC Comics and licensed to various other corporate entities. But that doesn't mean that it's wrong to talk about the DC movies, any more than it would be wrong to talk about the DC cartoons or DC toys. And your insistence - a really, really deeply committed insistence - that it was factually wrong to do so is really frustrating. They're two separate issues.

Ultimately I just don't like when people think the comics are like the movies when they're not even made by the same people and I think it's important to make that distinction. The argument got out of hand because Kaijin's response to me explaining that was to basically say context doesn't matter and facts didn't exist and I reacted poorly to that because I hate wasting my time on people who won't listen.

Ultimately you're right, though. It IS still technically a "DC" movie because it uses DC characters. And I do use DCCU because if nothing else, that means I'm talking about the movies. (Then again, that might be confusing...) But it's still important to make the distinction.

I suppose it's easier to just blame David Goyer.

I think the original argument was just people talking past each other. The person in question (who I respect not wanting to get involved in this shit again) should probably have made it clearer that they were saying that they specifically were talking about the movies, and that they had no connection to or feelings about the comics at all, in the first place, but I also think you did go too hard in response, because you do get super intense about DC. Which is fine in and of itself, but I think there are times when it'd probably be better to just chill.

All good though & I'm down to just blame David Goyer.

But weren't they saying that their context is differnet from YOUR context?

Yeah, but their context was incomplete.

Or to put it another way, they didn't have all the facts and I was just trying to, as anyone who likes something would, fill in a few blanks.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But they were talking about how their opinion of the movies based on their context (or experience which is context) shaped their opinion of DC.

And I was trying to correct that. In other words, their opinion was based on a misconception. I was trying to correct that misconception. Is that so wrong?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not wrong, but I think your means were disproportionate to the desired end. You know what I mean?

I wouldn't put it that way. I just get frustrated easily when people's debate tactics is to just repeat their original argument and not actually respond to the other person. So I tend to react poorly to that.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't think it was an argumentative tactic, so much as it was you guys just talking past each other. Which is maybe why it's so easy for stuff to go sideways. Mutual incomprehension.

And I totally get what you mean about frustration. But I think that's also kind of exactly what I'm talking about - because from the outside, the result of that frustration looks like it's massively out of proportion to the subject of the argument.

Fair enough!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, I guess the thing that worries me is that it seems like your narrative is still about the other person flagrantly ignoring the facts, and not about you and the other person not understanding what the other meant to say and then getting pulled into an argument because of mutual frustration

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if the other person felt that way about you.

Well "Fuck this conversation and fuck your willful ignorance."

You sound like an asshole for basically calling someone purposefully stupid because you of how a stranger on the internet's opinion of DC differs from yours.

I love how you imply that's the first thing I said right out the gate and not at the tail end of a long thread where I tried to explain something and they were just LA LA LA LA FACTS AREN'T REAL.

Who's the asshole here? Me, for getting frustrated, or you, for mischaracterizing my frustration as some sort of character flaw?

You.

Right, because nobody's allowed to get frustrated ever or they're a bad person. Whatever, kid.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
But they weren't saying that. At all. They were saying "I don't care about the comics. I only care about the movies, so the movies are my exposure to DC." Everyone could understand that except you.

Oh god. Don't start. Just read the original thread to hear all the responses he will give you.

yes, everyone else understood what they were saying but dethtoll didn't and won't.

NAYRT

That's clearly what they meant to say, and they misspoke. And then everything developed from there.
