iirc, there was a time where Hank's character was starting to move past the "hitting Janet" incident, and the two even made up and were slowly rebuilding their relationship (I want to say it was a run by Geoff Johns...? Yes, Geoff actually wrote for Marvel, once upon a time), and everything was starting to turn around for Hank in the characterization department.

Then Chuck Austen took over 'Avengers' after Geoff left for DC, and pretty much undid all of that development (popular belief is that he used Hank as a proxy to take out his childhood abuse issues on, but I'd take that with a grain of salt whether you like Austen or not), and made everyone on the team pretty much hate him after bringing the Janet slap up again, and Hank hasn't really recovered in the public eye since.

Even before Johns' run. West Coast Avengers plot B was at the beginning pretty much how Hank was working on in his issues and was amazing on his own way.
