but I've just never really gotten into the trends in some fandoms where people stan the villains and bash the protagonists

I don't get it either. Not liking the characters is perfectly understandable, but when people make them insanely OOC just to shit on them...that confuses me.

People do that IRL though to others all the time, sometimes knowingly, sometimes subconsciously, to validate their own victim feelings, to nurture a grudge, to score competition points, that sort of thing. So I suppose if you've got an issue with the protagonists for some reason, you've got to twist things round til you can justify it to yourself and others.

You have a point. Doing it to a fictional character is obviously less harmful (so there's that), but I don't fully understand why people have to justify disliking a character. Sometimes you just don't care for them, even if you don't have any major reasons not to. It happens to everyone, you don't need an excuse, just be honest about it. (And if you do have a good reason...then of course that's fine.)
