I didn't notice anyone on this community accusing it of pandering, but that happens all over internet comments because they dared to have not one, but TWO gay characters (oh my god overrepresentation am I right!) and some of the show takes place at Pride.

Since the show tries so hard to show people from different backgrounds and different walks of life struggling with different human problems, first and foremost before and sci-fi elements, it makes sense. To be fair, I think, say, Lito's storyline really was all about him coming to terms with his sexuality, without much else, but that didn't really bother me because the character was endearing and his plot compelling enough.

I think "pride", "being different" and even sexuality are key themes in the show. But if it is so thematic, I'm not sure how it's pandering, it's just the way the creators intended.
