Even if it's not fishing it's just sad. I don't know why you would keep writing if you're not getting any enjoyment out of it. But I get the feeling that some people who talk like that are just the kind of people who tend to think in extremes and have been scared out of saying anything good about their writing by people who act like acknowledging your strengths is bragging.

Good gosh this.

For some people even acknowledging your strengths gets people angry. It seems like a lose-lose battle. You show confidence in your work? Somebody will think you're an egomaniac. You always talk about how your work is crap, and you're either fishing or just a downer who has no confidence so there's no reason I should read it.

I've met people (who produce GREAT work) who's confidence have been beat down by enough people telling them they're bad and awful making them afraid to have confidence and afraid to try.

It makes me angry at the people who do this sort of thing with intent to crush as many people as they can. Their egos are fragile and can only be built up by watching others crash down. Including people I care about, and love, whose work I wanted to see grow.

And before anyone comes in saying "well if enough people tell them they're bad it must be true" let me say this, there is a way to give advice and tell people they have a problem without crushing any confidence they may have. I don't believe that all the people who do this just don't know how to give crit well. Some maybe. But some are bullies who seek out to do this.

Basically this. I feel so weird if I think certain parts of my writing are good. There's always a little voice in the back of my head that goes: "No it's not. Everything you do is crap."

To a certain extent there is a mentality a lot of people have where they don't want to be seen as bragging. On the other hand, a lot of it is personality. I'm just a deeply insecure person with a tendency towards depression, tbh.
