I live in Japan and I'm trying to make an appointment and get my depression (or whatever it is) formally diagnosed, but I'm only finding extremely expensive counseling services and I have no idea if any of them are legitimate, if they could provide medication, or even what I'm supposed to be looking for. It's extremely frustrating.

If you've got a GP or a regular doctor and the language skills to make yourself understood, go see them and see if you can get a referral. Don't know what the Japanese health care system is like but that's usually a pretty solid option wherever you are. If you don't have a regular doctor, or you're not confident in your language ability, ask around the expat community (even on the internet boards). Someone there will have had this problem and will know what to do.

My Japanese is good enough, but I think I'd feel more comfortable with a native English speaker. Unfortunately it looks like counseling isn't covered by national health insurance, so I won't be able to afford it anyway... if I can find an expat community that isn't gaijinpot I'll ask there.

Actually I think I found a place not far from where I live that takes insurance. I suppose it can't hurt to check them out, right?

Absolutely go check them out! If nothing else they can refer you to someone who can get you the help you need, if their style doesn't work for you or whatever.

Good luck!

They obviously know how worthless you are and are encouraging you to kill yourself through the silent treatment.

Fuck off, troll.

If that were the case I'd be more worried about my internet apparently being sentient.

Oh my, so edgy, when's the new slipknot album coming out??????
