The original story is pretty much the opposite of that. It's about a hero screwing up and losing his marriage, his position, and his self-esteem.

The Ultimates version is just Mark Millar being dumb and offensive, on the wetbrained theory that the American public was a bunch of stoner kids, sister-diddlers, and crazy people.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but it seems very different altogether.
