While I think you're mostly right, I've seen more fanfic writers fall by the wayside because of being too self-critical than because they were too easy on themselves.

Which situation would you rather be in: not improving as much as you could versus not improving at all because you've stopped writing in a paroxysm of lack of self-belief?
