Food you thought you hated that it turns out you never did

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any foods that you thought you hated that it turns out you never really did? Not changed your mind, but never actually hated them?

So, I've always hated beef. I've tolerated hamburgers but never purposefully chosen them and hated steak and other forms of beef unless drowned in sauce.

So it turns out that what I hate is burned beef. My mother likes her beef well done, so that is the way I've always had it. I'm in a hotel now, and I ordered a hamburger for dinner because it was the cheapest thing on the menu. Only I randomly said medium instead of the medium well I meant to say. And it is the most amazing thing I've ever eaten. I actually like the taste of beef, it just has to actually be cooked right.

Cauliflower. I used to fucking haaaaate cauliflower because my mom always served it when it was boiled into mush. It turns out that I actually like cauliflower quite a lot when it's steamed or drizzled with olive oil and baked

Pork chops. I thought I hated them, but it turns out that my mother was a terrible cook.

Same here, except it was my dad rather than my mom. He'd overcook them to the point where they had to be drowned in BBQ sauce to be at all tolerable, and even then, they'd have this really off-putting tough, rubbery texture.

Then, one day, my husband cooked some. And he cooked them right. And I was like, "holy shit, there are actual flavors."

I used to bury mine in ketchup just to deal with how dry and rubbery my Mom's were. As an adult, I've had them cooked properly, and they're just so delicious. I had no idea.

Ooo. My mother is normally a great cook, she just really likes her beef practically burnt. She'll order it medium well and then send it back to be cooked more. And whenever she cooks it the meat is always practically charred.

My parents are both like that with steaks in particular.

I used to think I hated Indian food. It's because my parents always took me to a shitty white American-run Indian restaurant where nobody knew how to cook, and it sucked.

I now love Indian food and cook a lot of it.

lmao, I don't think I've ever seen an Indian restaurant run by white people before. How...interesting (I have, however, seen a Chinese restaurant run entirely by hispanics which is also interesting)

So many foods now that I am older. So many vegetables in particular. Zucchini, squash, eggplant, onions (raw and cooked), and raw bell pepper. Roast them with a bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper? SO FUCKING AMAZING!

I grew up poor as fuck so all the veggies I ate were canned like corn and green beans and such.

a lot of veggies - like broccoli, for example. My mom just overcooked them - turns out I do like 'em stir fried.

There is a surprising number of people who completely destroy vegetables by steaming them into a mush and not seasoning them at all. Which okay, some vegetables have great flavor - when cooked properly! But plenty of them do well with at least a little bit of seasoning of some sort (and I'm not talking about dumping salt on).
Also many people steam frozen vegetables, which is even worse. They lose their flavor and become so watery.

When I was a kid me and my siblings were fed smoked salmon. The salmon tasted like the wood it was smoked on. It was awful. For years after that I was convinced I hated salmon. Until sometime in my teens when I had grilled salmon. It was heavenly and sweet and yummm. I couldn't imagine why I would hate that.

I didn't hate salmon. I hate food that that has some gross ass wood flavor.

Steak. It turns out that everyone in my family just likes it disgustingly rare.

disgustingly rare = the right way to eat a steak

I think the new rule should be that kids in mead eating families need to be allowed to try beef that's medium, medium rare, and medium well so that they can decide what's best. But no rare beef for kids. The bacteria is for grown-ups... because it's delicious.

Oh, shit yeah, nonny. Meat is always better the rarer it is. I once ordered a medium rare prime cut and accidentally got a blue rare steak but my iron levels were so low I didn't give a shit and gobbled it down. It was fucking delicious.

Of course, undercooked is a bit trickier with chicken and shellfish...

Ham. My mom/grandma always made it so moist it was slimy, and so salty I would gag, so I just assumed that was what "ham" was like.

It turns out that I like nicely dry ham with mustard.
