I haven't seen the woobie!Hans side of fandom tbh (even the people I see who ship him with other characters still portray him as a douche) but it doesn't surprise me that it exists. I have seen a lot of people who justify Gothel's actions by giving "proof" that she truly loved Rapunzel as a daughter though (even on this comm). I think the reason why so many people are offended by Gothel defenders is because after the movie came out, there were a lot of people who felt that her characterization hit too close to home and reminded them of their own emotionally abusive/manipulative parents (not even just people in fandom. I remember several movie reviews that commented on it and my own step-mother could hardly finish the movie because Gothel's mannerisms reminded her heavily of her mom). Several of her scenes were just plain unsettling

this

aside from the whole "evil witch using another person's magic hair to stay young" thing, gothel felt like a very real character that many people were (unfortunately) able to relate to their own experiences, so it makes sense that there would be more people who have a strong negative reaction to her. hans was just kind of a run of the mill villain. he didn't really have much of a character tbh

I did a secret a while back about how Gothel reminded my mother of her sister, who was abused as a child and is mentally ill. Hans didn't remind her or me of anyone we knew. I wouldn't defend Gothel, but I think she's easier to understand than Hans.
