TBH, if it's the actual language, it probably has nothing to do with virgin status. Some people just sort of write sex that way.

Very true. And it's really interesting when the sex scenes are the only bits that someone writes that way.

Sex seems to really trip people up in that way. Same with kissing/making out, come to think of it.

I think it's a form of shame? Like, even when you're writing sex you feel awkward about spelling it out.

Yeah, I think you're right that that's got something to do with it.

I think it might also just be one of those things that's...really hard to find interesting ways to write. Penis, vagina, clitoris, and anus all sound very clinical, so you almost have to use euphemisms, but most euphemisms are either really porny or completely ridiculous. And describing the way it feels to have sex can be daunting. Well, describing the way it feels to do anything can be daunting, but it seems like people really have trouble when it comes to sex (probably ties back into the whole shame thing).

Yes! I have given this a lot of thought in my life, and there is literally NO WORD in the English language to refer to a vagina that doesn't make me cringe for one reason or another. Even, and especially, "vagina."

With male genitalia, I'm okay with only one -- cock -- but the rest are awful IMO.

So writing porn is right out. It would have to be, like, ridiculous "...and then their energies merged in a kaleidoscopic firework of pure light" type stuff, and I would feel like a goofball writing it.

This is just my personal experience, I have zero idea if it's accurate or not, but the only times I've ever run into the word "cunny" was in adult male/seriously underaged female fic/art. Like adult male/five year old girl stuff. I've been very, very gunshy about using that word, since I don't know if it's some kind of pedo codeword or something.

It's not - it's very common in historical porn. It's got nothing to do with the age of the cunny in question and more to do with the age of the prose.

This is it exactly. I have trouble because the words sound either clinical or corny and it throws me off the scene completely and screws up how I write the rest of the scene.

I can't seem to overcome it.

There are definitely writers who seem to slide into purple prose as soon as they get to the sex scenes, and only then.

The one I'm thinking of who does this more than anyone I've come across is actually married, so I assume virginity has nothing to do with it.

I don't know why some writers do this. Is it because they feel it's expected to slide into laughable cliché for the steamy stuff? Was their first exposure to sex scenes from terrible romance pulp trash and so now they think it all has to be written like that... and not using normal language, I dunno, like the entire rest of their fic?

The writer who does this the most in my fandom gets huge praise for her sex scenes, so it's unlikely she'll ever change. I just skip all her fics entirely because of it.

Pity, because she's a good writer otherwise. I just can't get over all that weeping cock-style ridiculous terminology, the devouring of mouths, and the dusky nubs, and the scarlet throbbing shafts which start suddenly kicking in as soon as the characters even kiss. It would be okay if the characters were the sort to talk like that. But that purple prose is so unsuitable for those particular characters, which makes it so much worse. It just reads like the writer suddenly dropped fifty IQ points.

It's really frustrating and baffling when that happens! It's like, c'mon, you obviously know how to write well; what happened?

Maybe it's the assumption that there's a hard divide between porn and romance? I wonder if people think that, in order for a sex scene to not be "mere sex," it has to be surrounded in sweet, florid language.

Yep. You find that in RP, too. Some people are perfectly comfortable using "cock", others want to stick with "his hardness" or "his length" or whatever else. I don't think it's a matter of virgin status.
